Thanks, Cherry and Tel. No gardening till evening today but it was raining so I went in the greenhouse. Potted the rest of the cuttings taken in June ,mostly fuchsias but also a few geraniums and other things. Also potted some herbs from cell trays into three and a half inch pots.

Afternoon and evening for gardening today .Two main jobs needed doing-covering the chrysanth bed with polythene and digging up the potatoes.Decided to do the chrysanths first because this is a job that needs finishing once I start it .I can't leave it half finished. The sheet of polythene is nailed onto a wooden structure over the bed and if I don't secure it properly it will blow about in the wind and probably get torn. Went on the allotment this evening to dig up the potatoes but only got time to do half of them before it went dark.

Thanks, Steve Just had this evening for gardening today . Went on the allotment and continued digging up the potatoes. Also dug up an unbroken hen's egg and it isn't the first time.Have any of you had this experience and what do you think is the explanation? I think it has been buried by an animal, possibly a fox . Probably the animal intended to dig it up again when it needed it.

One person on the allotment kept geese and I would find a egg buried now and again, on my allotment.

Thanks for these replies,Tel and Rosie. This afternoon I washed half of the potatoes I dug up yesterday and put to one side the ones that may be showable. Will wash the rest tomorrow. Went to the allotment this evening and finished digging them all up. Will wash these tomorrow as well. Also took 30 odd cuttings off some pinks.

Today I have washed the rest of the potatoes and put to one side the potential show specimens.I have done all this washing in a bucket on the back lawn but I took the potential show ones to the kitchen sink and gave them a gentle scrub to try to get rid of any blemishes. They can't be scrubbed too much or the skin will be broken and the judge will notice. It is my own local show on Saturday and I sorted out some sets to show.I also gave some to 4 neighbours, enough to last them a few weeks. I also began deciding which pot plants I am taking and tidied them up.

Been getting my entries ready for our show most of the day.Went to the allotment for the veg this morning , cut flowers from the garden this afternoon then went back to the allotment this evening till 7.45 and cut the dahlias and a few other flowers. Rosemary has been taking entries over the phone while I have been out . I had to come home then to take the entries to the show venue. Other members of the committee have been there from 7.00 to record entries and write out entry cards. Entries closed at 8.30. The reason for getting most of my entries ready today is that much of tomorrow is taken up by transporting tables and setting up the show.We have to fetch tables from three places and take them to the venue and put them up then mark out the classes on the tables depending on how many entries there are in each class.I stall have more flowers to cut from the allotment then go staging at night.

My busy day is over for another year-my own local show at Worsley for which I am the show secretary. Apart from preparing and staging 68 exhibits and sorting out the trophies and prizes I have to transport tables in my car from 3 other places and help setting up the show then take all the tables back after and the vases back to the hut. I did very well though winning 20 firsts ,16 seconds and 8 thirds.Because I am the show secretary I have to read out the results while the president presents the trophies and prizes to the winners. It is rather embarassing though because I have to keep reading out my own name or say "I've won that".I won the most points in the show, most points in all the flower classes, most points in roses, most points in dahlias, most points in chrysanths and best exhibit in roses. There is either a trophy ,a medal or a prize for all of these. In dahlias I won first with Bryn Terfel, Elma E, Rose Jupiter, Willos Violet and Ruskin Diane ( there were no marks on it this week )There were 11 entries in this class.I didn't win the best exhibit though. That went to some Mary's Jomanda. In general flowers I won the antirrhinums, asters, calendulas and African marigolds.I only got one first in veg but it was a fennel in the "any other veg"class and there wer 11 entries in this class. I hope to show you some pictures tomorrow.I am not going to a show next week so the next one is 2 weeks today.
