Went to the allotment this afternoon with the intention of carrying on with the weeding but several things wanted tying up including the sweet peas which need doing twice a week.Thought I had better do this first. The gladioli wanted doing as well and the cosmos which was swamping some other plants. All this took longer than I thought. Spent the rest of the time disbudding and side shooting the dahlias. This needs doing regularly too or I won't win many more prizes, will I?

Haven't had much gardening time yesterday or today but I have a full day tomorrow.I have fed my baskets and tubs and many of the pot plants with phostrogen and taken cuttings off the angel pelargoniums. I have not seen many earwigs recently and last year I don't remember any at all. This afternoon though I noticed some earwig damage on some chrysanth blooms so I decided to do some earwigging. I keep a washing up liquid bottle in the shed filled with paraffin and I squirt some into the top of the hollow canes. This is where they hide during the day.If there are any earwigs in the canes they crawl out and fall to the ground, dead. Yes, as quick as that!. There were quite a lot. This evening I have been to the allotment to carry on with disbudding and tying up the dahlias.

Yesterday morning I went to my sons house to cut his privet hedges. Also picked all the apples off his tree. In the afternoon and evening I was on the allotment working on the dahlias. Didn't think it would take me so long, They needed tying up again, disbudding and removing unwanted shoots It seems queer thinking about winter and spring hanging baskets and other containers while the summer ones are still in full bloom but 300 plug plants that I had ordered from Dobies arrived. I didn't expect them till September or October. They were winter pansies, polyanthus, primroses and bellis.Pricked them all out into cell trays . Took me nearly all afternoon. This evening I have taken a few cuttings off angel pelargoniums and geraniums.
