The seeds that I sowed of large onions a few weeks ago didn't germinate so before going to the hut this morning I phoned D.T.Browns and ordered 20 Kelsae onion plants. When I got home from the hut, some "Fen early" onion sets had arrived from Marshalls. These are not large onions, like Kelsae. They are what I grow for the "not over 8oz " classes at the shows. I told you that I hadn't been able to take Rosemary a walk for a while mainly due to the weather but I did so this afternoon with her on her scooter. I went to Blackleach after to do the bird count.

After two dry days it has rained nearly all day today, hard at times so I have been in the greenhouse most of the time except that we had to go shopping this afternoon because we can't go tomorrow. I took another 47 dahlia cuttings.

It was dry today but after all yesterdays rain I thought it was too wet to carry on with the digging. I had to take Rosemary to hospital this morning for a covid test but I have been in the greenhouse the rest of the day. I made up the tubes of builders damp proof material that I grow parsnips and long carrots in, 51 tubes altogether I then carried on filling the tubes for parsnips with sieved potting compost.I hadn't enough so I had to sieve some more but I didn't have time to fill them all. As i put the compost in I keep poking it down with a cane so that there are no air pockets.

A drizzly day today. I had another pot washing session under the car port. I finished filling the parsnip tubes with compost and I planted 32 "Fen early" onion sets into 3 inch pots. Will do some more tomorrow.

Couldn't go to Blackleach today for the walk this morning or the art club this afternoon so they were a leader short for the walk. The reason is that we are isolating before Rosemary's operation tomorrow. Also I had to take her to hospital this morning for a blood test. It was drizzly again this morning but it rained harder this afternoon. First, I planted another 48 onion sets into 3 inch pots then I sowed parsnips in the tubes, 3 or 4 seeds in each. The tubes are stood in tubs in the greenhouse. I make composot for carrots from the bags that grew potatoes last year .I can't sieve it because it is too wet with being left outside so I put rubber gloves on and rub it between my hands. I mix it under the carport with Q 4 base using one ounce for each gallon of compost. I made two batches ,31 gallons altogether.

This morning I took another 26 dahlia cuttings then planted another 16 onion sets for school. These will be the last . I took Rosemary to hospital at 2.00 for her operation. I phoned the hospital to see if there was any news at 5.00, then at 6.00, then at 6.15 but couldn't get through. Then at 6.20 she phoned me. I was so glad to hear her voice and know that she was O.K. after her operation. When I got back from hospital this afternoon I started filling the carrot tubes with the compost I made yesterday but only had time to do half of them.

I think I have mentioned Edna before, one of the other walk leaders with me at Blackleach. This morning I went to her house and pruned her roses. Yesterday afternoon, and again this afternoon I have been on the allotment carrying on with manuring the beds. I have finished the brassica bed then done the potato bed , the chrysanth bed, the gladioli bed and the runner bean/sweet pea bed.I have just the dahlia bed and what I call the "others" bed to do now. When manuring beds I obviously do the beds first that will be planted first .For example the potatoes, some of the brassicas and perhaps onions will be planted in April, chrysanths and gladioli in May,and the dahlias and tender veg not till June.

Forgot to tell you yesterday that Heather, our daughter ,has come to help Rosemary when she comes home from hospital. We both went to hospital last night at 6.30 to bring her home. She has been doing exercises today and she will be ).K. in a few days time. Heather is a good help to her. Had this morning in the greenhouse and sowed a lot of brassicas in 3 inch pots. Got our Christmas dinner started by sowing the sprouts. Also 2 varieties of cabbage, 2 of cauliflowers, some broccoli and calabrese. When on the allotment this afternoon and manured the "others" bed.

This morning I took another 48 dahlia cuttings. Went to the allotment this afternoon and manured the dahlia bed. All the allotment beds are done now ,that need doing. I sill have the dahlia and chrysanth beds at home to do and those at school but they aren't very big. I sent an order to Parkers for some plants that I am short of, begonias and surfinias.

This morning I went to school and forked manure into the three main veg beds that need doing. I went to Blackleach this afternoon to do the bird count and then I went in the greenhouse and potted the remaining rooted chrysanth cuttings.

This morning 216 plug plants came from Suttons, 144 petunia "Frenzy" and 72 begonia "Illumination". This afternoon I planted them all into cell trays. I got some new cell trays from the hut this morning. I already have plenty but many of them are "past it" , rather split and need replacing. I went to school after. I told you yesterday that I had manured the main veg beds that needed doing but there is another bed where I grew runner beans last year that I would like to use again but I hadn't enough manure. I had two bags on the allotment that I hadn't used so I went for them and took them to school and forked it into this bed .The veg bed that will be the root crop bed and doesn't get manured had some cauliflowers in that I planted last year with a net over them .Some of them had died and the rest didn't look any good so I removed the net and got rid of the plants. I then weeded and forked over the whole bed .

This afternoon I (and Heather) took Rosemary a walk in her wheelchair. I went on the allotment after and planted my shallots. They go in a row along the front of the onion bed. Put some fish, blood and bone on first and hoed and raked it. There are 22, 12 inches apart.
