Went to hospital this afternoon to see Rosemary as usual and I took her a walk in a wheelchair and we went in a small garden. This is the first fresh air she has had for 6 weeks. When I got home I did my walk round Blackleach recording birds and wild flowers and then , when I got home I mowed the lawns.Went to school this evening and did some weeding on the children's beds and I got 7 of the 8 beds ready for planting.

This afternoon after my hospital visit I weeded the border round the front lawn again. This evening I went on the allotment and planted my sweet peas. 47 altogether, and tied them up.

Today I have emptied and re-filled 5 of my cold frames. I had to shift some things around to make room for the plants I was taking out. Couldn't find room for the contents of the other 2 frames so they will have to wait till I have planted more things.Went on the allotment this evening and put the structure of canes up for the peas. Also weeded the large drums where carrots were growing because they were full of chickweed. Those of you who get Garden News will know that I write once a month on a page called "Over the fence". My copy arrived this morning and they have put my article and my pictures in under the name of Derrick Turbitt. He is also a contributor to this page but usually on a different week .I have been trying to phone Garden News today but couldn't get through so I am now going to send them an email.

Went to school this morning and got the last children's bed ready for planting. This was worse than the other beds, full of tall weeds . After going to hospital this afternoon I planted a row of gladioli along the fence in the front garden. Heather is here again. She came this morning and went straight to hospital. Went on the allotment this evening and planted my "Show perfection" peas on the canes I fixed up yesterday and fastened them to the canes with twistits. They should have been planted earlier because they were rather tall and difficult to fix to the canes.

A drizzly morning but it dried up later. 15 plugs each of Lobelia "Queen Victoria" and Verbena bonariensis came from Suttons. They are "garden ready" plugs but the ground for planting them isn't ready yet so I potted them into 4 inch square pots. My plant of Salvia "hot lips"is rather leggy so I cut it down and took 20 cuttings from it. I also potted another 6 tomato plants in their final pots. I had to go to a meeting at Blackleach at 7.00.We haven't had one since lockdown. It finished at 7.30 though so I went to the allotment. Sowed the broad beans in three rows, 50 beans altogether. I also finished tying the individual sweet pea and runner bean canes to the horizontal cane. I started doing this yesterday.

As usual on Thursdays I was at Blackleach till 3.00 ,the Wellbeing walk in the morning and art club in afternoon. It was a bit wet for the walk but dried up later. I did some more weeding on the border this afternoon. I then went to school at 3.30 for the garden club for the first time till 4.30. Went straight to hospital after. Went to the allotment this evening and carried on weeding the rest of the "others" bed which was very bad, full of chickweed. Did about three quarters of it. I put"derekbrooks likes this"at the top of my post by accident. I didn't know how to do this and I have been asking Jean(Paws57) on the allotment this evening how to do it because she does it sometimes. She said there was a key to press but I didn't know which one

Top right of your post Derek, it is the thumbs up icon, if you press it by mistake then pressing it again gets rid of it

Thanks, Steve. I pressed the key just to see what it was but I didn't know how to get rid of it. I will know in future. Apart from going to hospital at 12.00 I have been on my allotment this morning, afternoon and evening. I planted my runner beans. They go on the same structure of canes as the sweet peas. I tied them to the canes. They don't need tying regularly . When they start growing they wind themselves round the canes. Spent the rest of the time weeding. Finished the "others" bed then did the brassica bed.

Been on the allotment this afternoon after my hospital visit and this evening. I decided to weed the onion bed which was rather bad. I then put fish, blood and bone on the remainder of the "others" bed and the brassica bed and raked it in. Then started putting up the canes for climbing French beans but couldn't finish them because it started raining at 9,00.

I have told you before about the containers outside the cabin on the allotments where we have our meetings. I have planted them for the last few years and am going to do again this year. We are having a Jubilee tea party on the allotments on Friday. I have been asked if I could have them done in time for the party. So this afternoon I removed most of the old compost and filled them up with new compost and got them ready for planting. I then finished putting up the cane structure for the climbing French beans. This evening I have mowed the lawns and emptied and re-filled two of my frames.

Hoping for a good day on the allotment but it was too showery. So I decided to work under the car port. I mixed another 10 gallons of compost to top up the potatoes growing in bags and tubs. I did those at home but those on the allotment need doing. I then decided to start getting my tubs and other containers ready for planting .I put fresh compost in the tubs every other year so I do half of them one year and the other half the next. I keep a record in my diary which ones are done each year. With the tubs that are not having all new compost I remove some of it , stir the remainder up with a hand fork and mix in some Q 4 fertiliser before topping up with compost. The compost that I removed I will spread out om the allotment beds. I got all my tubs ready for planting except three. Went in the greenhouse this evening. I had 28 geraniums still in three inch pots so I potted them on into 5 inch. They should have been done before but there wasn't room.

Apart from going to hospital for 12.00 I have had the morning, rest of the afternoon and evening on the allotment. I did some planting in the communal containers but didn't finish them because I hadn't decided what to put in. I then planted climbing French bean "Rob Roy" and runner beans "Mergoles" on the last structure of canes I erected. next, I sowed three rows of dwarf French beans "The prince". When I told you that I had put up structures of canes I hadn't tied the individual canes to the horizontal canes . I went back this evening to do so and also put in some diagonal canes to further strengthen the structures.

Today I have been planting the border round the front lawn . I didn't quite finish it because there is one place that I haven't decided what to put in. Went on the allotment this evening. Finished planting the communal containers first then planted part of my Christmas dinner, the sprouts.

This afternoon I finished planting round the front lawn. In the place I hadn't planted yesterday I put some begonias. Between the lawn and the rose bed there is a brick path, just one brick wide. Grass from the lawn spreads ang goes between these bricks .I cut along the bricks with an old meat knife making a neat edge then get the grass out from between the bricks with a screwdriver. I decided to do this today , now that the planting is done , so that it looks nice and neat. At the other side of the bricks, along the front of the rose bed I planted a row of French marigolds. This evening I went on the allotment and planted the rest of the brassicas that were ready, cabbages, cauliflowers and calabrese. I put a net over the bed supported on a framework of canes to keep the butterflies off but I hadn't time to finish it, so butterflies please keep off till tomorrow!
