Today I have potted some calabrese and kohl rabi from 3 inch pots to 5 inch. I have not put shading on my greenhouses yet. I usually do it in May or June.I must do it soon so today I cleaned the top of the greenhouses ready for it. On the allotment this evening I filled up two of my water butts again. I have told you before that I grow carrots in three of my cold frames in bore holes filled with compost that I have mixed . I started making these bore holes this evening.

When on the allotment yesterday evening I brought these sweet peas home to put in a vase. They are called "Just Julia". You can see my back garden in the background.

This morning I sowed some corn salad in a cell tray, and some purple sprouting broccoli, cauliflowers and 2 varieties of cabbage in 3 inch pots. I also did some weeding on the back rose bed. This afternoon I painted the greenhouses with shading paint. Should have done it weeks ago, of course, but have been too busy. At 7.00 this evening I was supposed to be leading a wild flower walk round Blackleach Country Park. The wellbeing walks which take place all round the area today and tomorrow had already been cancelled due to the heat. I saw Richard, the ranger , on Saturday and asked him if he thought we should go ahead with the flower walk. I said that I would go and see who turned up and ask them if they wanted to do the walk or perhaps a shorter one and he agreed. I phoned him this morning to see if he had any further thoughts about it and he said that he had cancelled it and had put a notice on the visitor centre door .Anyway, I did go up to Blackleach to see who turned up and there were four people. I told them, of course, that it was cancelled but asked them what they thought about having it next Monday. They thought that was a good idea so that is probably what we will do. I went on the allotment after, mainly to water, but I staked and tied a rose that was hanging over the path and made a few more bore holes for carrots. I filled up the other water butt.

Been on the allotment this morning and this evening. I made bore holes for carrots in the second of the three frames and I sowed carrots in this and the other frame in which I had made bore holes. Bore holes still need making in the other frame. Tied up some dahlias that needed doing.I picked some loose leaved lettuce and the first courgettes. At home I fed the tomatoes, hanging baskets and other containers with tomato maxicrop. The first courgettes. The variety is Orelia

Apart from watering at home which I do twice a day this weather I just had this evening for other jobs. Went on the allotment to water but I also made 18 boreholes in the other frame for carrots. Will sow the seeds next time I go.

It was raining till mid afternoon and we did need some .Went in the greenhouse and potted a lot of plants that were in small yoghurt pots into 4 inch pots. There were some Salvia "Hot lips", diascias, bacopas and nepeta, about 50 plants altogether. Also sowed a packet of bellis seeds. When it stopped raining this afternoon I didn't chance going to the allotment. I carried on weeding the rose beds then the chrysanth snd dahlia beds and the paths between them and managed to get them all finished. Not many weeds on the beds but the paths between the beds had got rather bad.

It was drizzly this morning but it dried up this afternoon. I went on the allotment after my hospital visit and sowed carrot seeds in the third frame so they are all done now. I had quite a lot of the carrot compost left that I fill the bore holes with and some extra seeds. There were also two containers on the allotment not being used so I filled them with the carrot compost and sowed seeds in them. I did something daft this morning before going to the hut. I washed my gardening pants with the packet of carrot seeds in the back pocket. The seeds were still O.K. though so I still used them. I also pulled a lot of large weeds from the gladioli bed that were easy to pull up. Went on the allotment again this evening but I had only time to put more ties on the peas and sweet peas before it started raining hard about 8.00 so I came home and watched the football.

The preacher at our church this morning was a lady called Debbie Harkness. The name Harkness to me means Roses. I have three bushes in my garden of Ann Harkness , a bronze coloured floribunda and I used to grow Ena Harkness, a red hybrid tea. Just as a joke, after the service I asked her how Ann and Ena were getting on. She didn't know what I meant at first but she did when I mentioned roses. She said that she hadn't had much success growing Harkness roses. When I got home from hospital this afternoon it was raining and it has done so much of the day. So I have been in the greenhouse most of the time. I potted 5 peppers from 5 inch pots into 8 inch. I took 20odd geranium cuttings and a few regal pelargoniums and a begonia .Did some tidying up of the other plants and potted some on that needed it. I hope it is fine tomorrow evening because I am doing the wild flower walk at Blackleach Country Park which was cancelled last Monday.

It was showery today so it has been another day in the greenhouses. I have three varieties of regal pelargoniums , a few plants of each. They were getting rather leggy so I cut them down and took several cuttings of each one. It rained early evening but it dried up and managed to stay fine for my wild flower walk round Blackleach, thank goodness. There were 14 of us. I told them the names of each flower we found and which family they belonged to and the meaning of the names if I knew them and also any medical uses .

Fine today so a full gardening day except for going to hospital at 12.00. , mostly weeding though. Weeded my front garden again this morning. Those weeds I told you about a week or two ago were coming up again. Went on the allotment this afternoon and evening. There were gaps in the rows of turnips that I sowed before so I sowed some more seeds in the gaps. I harvested 5 cauliflowers. The bed that they were in is covered with nets to keep the butterflies out so I had to fold the nets away so that I could get at them. It is not easy getting the nets back in position after so while they were off I decided to weed the area. I also tied the sweet peas again but I spent the rest of the time pulling up large weeds that were easy to pull up without forking them out and I filled four sacks with them.

Went to the allotment this morning and evening and my own garden this afternoon. You know about the communal tubs on the allotment that I planted. I thought of taking a picture of them to show you and to send to Garden News. The terrace on which they are standing is full of weeds though so I thought I had better get rid of them first so I sprayed them with roundup. Also put some on weeds round my compost bins and the path in front of the onion bed. I also pulled up more large weeds and harvested the first three marrows and more courgettes. Will take these to Blackleach tomorrow for anyone who wants them. At home I have mowed the lawns and fed the tomatoes, baskets and other containers with maxicrop tomato.

Not much gardening today .As usual on Thursdays I was at Blackleach till 3.00 for the wellbeing walk this morning and art club this afternoon then straight to hospital. I did go to the allotment this evening and started weeding but only had about 10 minutes before it started raining so I just came home.

Apart from going to hospital this afternoon, as I always do, I have had a full day and evening on the allotment, mainly weeding. Yesterday I started weeding among the Brussel sprouts and the path behind them. Today I decided it would be easier if I staked the sprouts first .I do this for many things, particularly chrysanths and dahlias .So I staked them and finished the weeding. I then weeded the gladioli bed and the path in front of it and alongside of it and I pulled a lot of thistles out of the dahlia bed. I also gave the communal containers in front of the cabin a feed.
