Edenfield show today. Martyn came to look after Rosemary while I went. The flower judge didn't turn up so I had to judge as well as showing. There is a man called Chris who is my main rival in the flower classes so in some classes we were competing against each other but we judged together. We started off by judging the classes that neither of us were in. The classes that he was in but I wasn't, I judged and visa versa. When the veg judge had finished judging we asked him to judge the classes with us that both Chris and myself were in. He does grow flowers as well as veg .It was not the ideal situation but there was no alternative. I put 50 entries in and got 13 firsts, 13 seconds and 12 thirds. I will shoe you some pictures tomorrow.

Thanks, Grindle Neither Martyn or Heather could come to our house today so I have stayed at home seeing to Rosemary. I have been in the garden most of the day ,just kept going in every so often to see if she wanted anything. I have given the tomatoes, hanging baskets and other containers another feed of maxicrop tomato. I have disbudded and sideshooted all the chrysanths and dahlias and put bloom bags on some of the chrysanths. The path between the rose bed and the chrysanth bed had a lot of small weeds coming so I sprayed them with weedol. Last week, a friend gave me two salvia plants,a "Amethyst lips" and one called" Cerro Potosi." I had never heard of this last one. This evening I took some cuttings from them both. The same person gave me a Salvia "Hot lips" last year and I now have several plants of this from cuttings that I took.

Like yesterday I had to stay at home to see to Rosemary. I potted some dwarf delphiniums from yoghurt pots into larger pots. I use a lot of cell trays in the spring for transferring plug plants and seedlings into. When not in use I keep them behind the greenhouse. This afternoon I got them all out and put them on the lawn and sorted them out into their different sizes. Threw a lot away that were no longer any good and put the rest behind the greenhouse neatly in piles . It took me nearly all afternoon .It is raining this evening, the first rain since Aug 4th.

This morning I mowed the lawns. I then dead headed the roses. I like lady's mantle (alchemilla mollis) .There are two clumps of it on the terrace and a row at the front of the rockery. This is enough, though, and I don't want it all over the garden which is where it would be if I allowed it to, so now that it has finished flowering I cut it all down then it wouldn't seed. Heather, our daughter, arrived at 12.30 and is staying till weekend,so I was able to go to the allotment this afternoon and evening. Picked 4 more marrows, some courgettes, runner beans, French beans and broad beans. Put more ties on the sweet peas and gladioli. Cut some flowers for one of Rosemary's carers from the allotment and my own garden.

As usual on Thursdays I was at Blackleach till 3.00 . In the afternoon I did some more weeding and tidying up on the border. It was raining this evening so it saved me the job of watering on the allotment. So I went in the greenhouse and potted 32 brassicas from 3 inch pots into larger pots, 2 varieties of winter cabbage, broccoli and cauliflowers.

Heather, our daughter, is here till Tuesday. I want to do as much on the allotment as I can while she is here because I won't be able to go as much when she has gone home. So , I have been on the allotment this morning and afternoon and again this evening to water. Before I went this morning I put the table and chairs on the terrace then Rosemary can sit outside if she wants to. The table dismantles when not in use and is kept in the shed. I didn't think it was worth putting them out while she was in hospital because I have a form that I can sit on. I took some calabrese and kohl rabi plants to the allotment to plant on the brassica bed. I had to weed the bed first, though, and this took me all morning. I had to remove the nets which are over the bed to keep off the butterflies .I finally got the plants planted this afternoon and put the nets back. This isn't an easy job, getting them in position and making sure there are no gaps. Most of the gladioli had been staked before but there are some on the chrysanth bed that hadn't been done so I did those. Also filled up the water butts. Brought home some lettuce and courgettes.
