just been having a catch up read Derek as I haven't read your diary for a few weeks now. Sorry!
My favourite rose is also New Dawn and my mum had one that was planted in the late 30's. I took cuttings in 1995 when she died and it is growing well in my garden still. A lovely rose.

Today I have carried on emptying my propagating greenhouse. I told you that I had removed all the plants on Saturday but there were all sorts of things in such as seed trays, pots and other things .I removed the shelves, put the grit from the trays into sacks and removed the cables from the warming benches.

I have told you before that my eldest grandson, Alex, who lives on Anglesey is Newcastle United supporter .He went to a match yesterday and he called to see us this afternoon on his way home. Heather, his mum ,arrived this evening for a few days. The rest of the time today and yesterday I have been carrying on sorting my propagating greenhouse out. I have removed the sand from the warming benches , swept the floor and put my large propagator in position.I had to do some repairs on it first. It took a long time to get it in position and get it level as it is heavy to move about.

My next job in the greenhouse is to spray the staging, the shelves, warming benches and propagator with disinfectant which I was hoping to do today. To do this though, I need a new sprayer so I went to my local garden centre and bought one. When I got home, though, I couldn't get it to work so I took it back. They hadn't any more but they said they would get me one tomorrow so I have to go by 2.00 because they are closing then till New Year. All I could do in the greenhouse was to put the shelves in position.

Nothing I could do in the greenhouse till I get my new sprayer so I stayed in this morning carrying on with my writing. As you know, I am writing seasonal jobs for each month next year for the National Vegetable Society magazine. I have sent the ones up to October to the editor so I am writing now for November. I went to the garden centre for a sprayer about 1.00. Lisa, the owner of the garden centre wasn't there but she had got one and left it for me. I took some extra money in case the new one was dearer. The one I took back yesterday was one litre and the new one she had left me was two litres. This should have been dearer, of course, but the lady who served me said it was a straight swap and there was no extra charge so I have got a bargain ,haven't I? .We tested it there to make sure it worked. So I went in the greenhouse and sprayed all the staging and shelves , warming benches and propagator with disinfectant.

In the greenhouse today I put the warming cables in position on a layer of sand on the warming benches. Because there are no plants in this greenhouse I turned the power off but I turned it on again today for a bit to warm the cables because they are easier to bend in position when they are warm. Turned the power off again after. To save electricity I am going to leave all the plants in the other greenhouse till after New Year when I start sowing seeds and taking cuttings.

Hope you are all having an enjoyable Christmas up to now. Christmas Day is the only day in the year when I don't do any gardening jobs. We have been to Martyn's this evening for our Christmas meal.

Thanks for your wishes, Grindle and Seaburn Today for me, after a days rest it was back to doing a few gardening jobs. I planted 33 shallots into three and a half inch pots. The boxes that I stand the pots in hold 11 pots so I did 3 boxes. In summer, I have some large trays on the greenhouse staging containing grit on which I stand plants because it creates a moist atmosphere. I had removed the grit a week or so ago and I put the trays outside while I sprayed the staging. This morning I put the trays back on the staging in position upside down because they don't have grit in them at this time of year. This afternoon I went to the allotment for some veg .Martyn is cooking for us again tomorrow and he wanted some sprouts but I also got some turnips and a cabbage. When I got home, I pealed the sprouts ready for tomorrow.

Not much time this morning but I cleaned up the veg I brought home yesterday and what we didn't need ourselves I gave to some of our neighbours. This afternoon I have been washing my seed trays in my wheelbarrow under the car port. I did all the half trays and about half of the full ones. Didn't get time to finish them. Tomorrow afternoon we are going to Beaumaris till Friday. All the family are going. Martyn is taking us. Heather and our youngest grandson ,Jake, have just arrived at our house a few minutes ago and they are coming as well. Alex, our eldest grandson lives near Beaumaris with Beth, his girlfriend, so we will see them there. I am not taking my computer so you won't hear from me till I get back on Friday. Before I go tomorrow, I will water all my plants as they won't get watered again till Saturday. Shallots potted up yesterday

We arrived home from our mini holiday in Beaumaris this afternoon. I tried three times this afternoon to get on the forum but I couldn't and I don't know why. So I have just tried again and I have managed it. The weather wasn't very nice, it was blowing a gale all the time. It was nice for all the family to be together, though. We all went out for a meal yesterday evening, eight of us, Rosemary and me, Martyn and Heather, Karle(Heather's husband),Alex and Jake(our grandsons)and Beth (Alex's girlfriend). After the meal, Alex gave us the news that Beth is pregnant, so we are going to be great grandparents. So tomorrow, it is back to doing gardening jobs.
