I have been on the allotment this morning and evening. I finished cutting down the potato haulms , brought some of them home and filled the re-cycling bin. Then carried on with the weeding . Brought home the rest of the small onions , some calabrese and another bunch of sweet peas. This afternoon I walked round Blackleach country park counting the birds and writing down all the wild flowers as I do every two weeks. Rosemary usually comes with me but she had enough walking last week. I recorded 74 different wild flowers. On Wednesday evening I am leading a wild flower walk there as I do every year so what I saw today will give me an idea what we are likely to see on Wednesday. I tell people which family each flowers belongs to and also tell them the meaning of the name (if I know it !) when I got home I potted 6 peppers into 9 inch pots and weeded the rose beds in the back garden.

Just this evening for gardening so I went on the allotment. When I staked and tied up the broad beans a week or so ago I was short of canes. I called at the hut this afternoon for some more so I put more canes in and tied them up better. I don't put a cane to each plant but tie 3 or 4 plants to one cane. I fixed up the hose pipe which had not been in use since last year and filled up two of the water butts. It has been very warm today so I gave the plants that needed it a good watering.

Rosemary needed the car this morning so I stayed at home doing jobs in my garden. Fed all the baskets and tubs and a lot of the pot plants with phostrogen. Sprayed the chrysanths with systhane . I bought a new sprayer at Whitby so I tried it out. I then carried on weeding the rest of the morning. I could have gone on the allotment this afternoon but I decided to stay at home. Because of all the weeds on the allotment weeding at home tends to get a bit neglected and the chrysanth beds needed doing and the paths between them so I did these and then the path up the back garden. This is a brick path and weeds grow between the bricks. We had a lovely evening for the wild flower walk and about 14 people came which is very pleasing because there were only about 8 of us last year. This is just a nice number because if there are too many it is difficult to talk to them all together. I told you on Monday that there were 70 odd flowers out at present. Richard, the ranger , saw a few yesterday that I missed on Monday so he left me a note so there are about 80 altogether. Don't know how many we saw tonight but we did very well. Took Rosemary home after then went to the allotment just to water the plants in the polytunnel

Went on the allotment this morning and evening and stayed at home this afternoon. This morning I made a plan of where I planted all the annuals for cutting and showing and counted the numbers of each kind. I keep a record of things like this in a book. One reason is to make sure asters go in a different place each year because they are prone to wilt disease. I then made a start tying up those that needed it. At home this afternoon I made 10 gallons of carrot compost by sieving some old seed compost and mixing it with some Q4 base. Took this to the allotment this evening . I grow carrots on the allotment in three aluminium frames. They are the same frames that I use at home in spring to harden off plants for planting out. I made 54 bore holes in these frames and filled them with this compost and sowed 3 0r 4 carrot seeds in each. The reason for growing them in frames is to cover them with fleece to keep carrot flies out.
