Whilst sorting out the heat mat for the greenhouse I thought I would put the tubers on some shelving in doors and put a convector heater underneath.
It is warming them up, may I ask please:
1 - how long do you think it would take for some growth to be seen, I understand that it will depend on the variety and the heat but it is at least 18degrees.
2 - should I be spraying the tubers with water or just keeping the peat damp.
Thanks for your help.

Our tubers didn't survive the winter - not sure what we did wrong Now - do I spend loadsa money on new plants like I did last year or just buy some tubers from the garden centre? It is a shame 'cos I really loved the flowers last year

I water then just to keep the compost moist.

Thanks Tel, any rough ideas how long before I should see some movement? I just hope that they have come through the winter.

Scrumpy, your Alva's Supremes are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the photo! I'm afraid I am going to reciprocate with something less beautiful, so sense of humour to the ready! I have been trying a few bee pollinated seedlings, just to get the feel for raising Dahlias from seed. This is not good, but believe me, it is not half as bad as the other two which have flowered so far. I am just sharing it for people who are wondering about having a dabble: apart from the fact that it is clock faced, fimbing a little bit, been chewed by earwigs and has a dodgey centre, it's a lovely bloom

Thank you, Scrumpy. I shall mollycoddle it a bit and see what bloom number two looks like. I have kept the other two wild looking seedlings with all their madly curled petaloids just for now, so that this one can look better by comparison. There are buds on others.

As long as you pick the best ones, I can't see it being a problem for thee and me - we want flowers in the garden, not 'show' blooms, after all. I had to pay £2.99 for 'David Howard' at the GC the other day. I shall get my order in to Parker's very soon - they don't stock 'David'.

I will go along with Geranium on this, if i were growing just for the garden, Because the tuber was priced at £1 the cost would not come into it, 1. Do i like the bloom on the pkt, yes, 2. can i see or feel the condition of the tuber, yes, its ok, 3. buy it.

[/color] I do like the bloom on the packet ('Mystery Day'), the condition of the tuber seems good, the man nearby who was also buying dahlia tubers told me he'd bought them last year and they had flowered very well, so I took a chance and paid my £1 ;D
