Spent the afternoon tidying up the aftermath of storm Bert. Lopping off snapped branches from trees, re-staking the leaning ones cutting back battered plants and hubs had to mend a broken coldframe covering. Lots of leaf gathering too.

I planted some Japanese onions in a long deep trough last week (or was it the week before ... time flies !) I bought them loose in a garden centre and there were enough to put in the trough and two big tubs. I also put my tender plants under cover so they're all safe. I haven't done anything in the garden now for about two weeks but there are some non-plant jobs that I hope to get done soon on a mild dry day.
80L seems to be the norm around here seaburn .

never thought about that seaburn I used to buy the 60lt bags, I know some places here sell compost in dumpy bags which is useful if you're making a new garden, only fed the birds and spent my time clearing out the boot room

I only took some photos of the few flowers I have on the balcony now.
I removed some dead Lobelias from the hanging baskets. I still have a self-sown Lobelia that still has a few flowers so I took a couple of close up photos.
Just after 4.30pm I was able to see the ISS fly over again, but I almost missed it as it didn't appear in its usual place in the sky, it came from a direction that I had never seen before! Even though it was cold on the balcony I was able to see it for 5 minutes till it vanished from sight.

I put my Sollya in the greenhouse and I covered my Loropetalum with fleece and bubble wrap until I can get it in the greenhouse. I pushed my Trachelospermum asiaticum Summer Sunset underneath a cold frame on bricks, to be out of the frost. I'll put it in the greenhouse when I've made room for it. I found two Fuchsias still outside so I put them in a perspex shelter.
I swept leaves off the path down by the back road. They come off the hedgerow trees so there will be more there tomorrow, but it's a bit of exercise isn't it
Believe it or not there are several flowers on my Loropetalum ! I had quite a surprise to see them ...

I've not been out on the balcony today nor have I looked at my plants. There's nothing I can do for them at present. If some extreme weather is forecast I can try to put them somewhere on the balcony where they, hopefully, won't be too affected but other than that there is nothing to do for 3 or 4 months!
It was raining all morning & it entered 3/4 of the way into the balcony so no room to move without getting wet either!

fed the birds and opened the box of cheapies from Suttons Only had enough compost to pot 5x4 pots of crocus Mammoth. They are now in the hamster cage to stop the mice getting in and eating them. The rest are in the cool shed until I can get more compost.

Not put so much as a foot out onto the balcony today! I did water my 'Dragon Wings' Begonias in the kitchen as well as the Spider plant.

Managed to reach and cut down some of the dead branches on a Sycamore stump. Sadly the rest of them will have to be left, as they are too high to reach safely. More leaf collecting, not many left now I am glad to say.

One 84 year old up a ladder and one 78 year old holding it, just to remove a dead branch. Unfortunately the dead one got stuck and could not be freed so we had to remove a live branch. Both of them dropped nicely. Twigs shredded and binned and the logs cut up and delivered to the neighbour. Shredded and compost heaped a lot of his cut down perennials. Saves him having to cut them up to fit in his green bin and it does mean we end up with a lot of compost for both of us. We do have fun!

Well done geumgrower. I am not keen on heights now. I picked up a bin full of oak leaves. A lot gentler gardening task. My son is bringing me a huge sack to help and at the end of the leaf season we will fill a trailer to take to White House Farm for composting.
