Did anyone read Bob Flowerdew's idea of growing tomatoes with, perhaps one sideshoot trained up the same way? He thinks we should be doing this to get more tomatoes and not having to stop them at the top. I can see his idea and quite like it as I have done this with a peculiar tomato last year, and one this year which looked right for this treatment. I don't think I would do it with all types of tomato.

I have done this with tommytoes cherry but can't recall which variety I used. There is a limit on how many tomatoes one can use and anyway in a g'house you could train a plant up the side and along the roof and down the other side fruiting all the way. Have also used the technique on sweetpeas. Called 'Double cordon'. its a fairly common thing with fruit trees too.

Sweetpea, I use all my tomatoes and even buy the local ones given to the church for their suppers and sales. I make them into a sauce with chilli and onions which is used to top pasta lunches and to add to soups, etc.

Remember to nip out the side shoots on the toms ML, I usually nip out the growing tip once 4 or 5 trusses have set. I read this with a sinking heart Rosie, sounds like stopping dahlias and I'm having nightmares over that! Too many things to remember. erm, Rosie what do you do if you have a tomato bush because I didn't remember to nip the side shoots out...

Is it a cordon type that has gone bushy? I would still nip out some side shoots, post a pic if you can ML

The plants are Golden Sunrise and Gardener's Delight one each daughter. My straggly should have come out of the greenhouse months ago / planted up tomatoes are growing more tomatoes than theirs and theirs have been planted for quite a while now. I want to get their bodies in the shot to try and detract from the manure sacks in the background / miscellaneous toot + give some true indication of the size of the problem.

Two toms planted note upturned pop bottle in middle to facillitate watering/feeding Canes alongside for tying in later I've planted some tomatoes outside it a grow sack (rather than a grow bag) 'pot' would it work if I 'planted' a bottle in the middle for feeding / watering or would that be just plain silly.

That's exactly what some people do, in fact t5here are some tops that screw in to where the bottle top was and they are like a green spike with holes in, you fill with water tip it upside down in to the pot or bag where it slowly releases its water and its more or less what you have already done

I am trying some with Bob Flowerdew's method, i.e. to leave another flowering branch and keep two going up, and some with a single stem. At present I am liking Bob F's method because then they are not having to be stopped at the top and I am getting more tomatoes. I will probably do both next year too. Moonlight, I think you may have left it too late to use the single stake or cordon method of growing, and I would take out some of those extra shoots. See what others think about it. I am not an expert as I have only been growing tomatoes since starting this forum (well, the one before). Is anyone picking tomatoes yet?
