Unfortunately, sweetpea, it seems the 3 R`s are no longer taught in schools. So it would appear. Deplorable IMHO

You are completely wrong, daitheplant and sweetpea. The National Curriculum has literacy at its heart, and children of all ages are tested frequently - far too frequently! I don't know where you got the impression that the 'three R's' aren't taught - they most certainly are.

I don't know where you got the impression that the 'three R's' aren't taught - they most certainly are. i don't doubt that they are taught Geranium but it would appear that in so many cases just not very well. you only have to read the papers to spot many misspellings and grammatical errors and watch teachers being interviewed on TV showing an abysmal lack of vocabulary which is peppered with unnecessary and quite superfluous words and phrases. Not all teachers are thickos I grant you but ever since the teaching profession became a job and no longer a profession it has diminished greatly in the eyes of my generation. I think that a lot of the blame must lie with the polititians who have brought such mediocrity to the fore in their scramble to introduce, 'Forward methods' of teaching. Although I wasn't a teacher I did work in a large comprehensive in Putney as a security and lettings agent and mingled with the staff and to a lesser extent, the pupils and even then i got the impression that the methods employed were very sub standard in comparison to the methods used in my day. So now you know where I at least got the impression from. Oh and as well as the foregoing I had five children who never got what I would call a good education. Education is IMHO the single most important thing in any child's upbringing as without it they start with a huge disadvantage in life.

sweetpea this is getting out of order and I won't argue with a teacher, who obviously knows the rights and wrongs of the curriculum, and is old enough to remember how it used to be. Furthermore, not everyone on the forum is blessed with school certificates and superb spelling, but they are absolute experts at growing, sometimes difficult, plants. These people have real practical skills.

You also know as well as I do that I hold people with gardening skills on here with the greatest respect and use their advice myself. That is not to say that all advice on here is perfect as there is no such thing. If it works for you then use it, if not, try something else. When I attempt to help someone with a gardening query I use my own experience rather than what the books may say. Quite often the two are at odds and common sense has to be the order of the day. ps love you really crawl crawl
