I planted my shallots a couple of days ago. I lost a lot of my autumn onion sets so I put the shallots in the gaps.

now in final pot 11cm square. Plants thicker than a pencil, about 2 foot tall. Five good leaves on them. Hopefully a few more leaves before planting outside in a months time.

Are they for showing scrumpy? Yes, they are for the large onion class so hopefully some will end up around the 3-4lb size and be a good shape by the end of July The under 8oz onions i have for showing can be seen in trays on the right. And if they don't win anything i'll fry the damn things

did you plant sets in the autumn?
Sounds like they've bolted.....onions are biennial, meaning bulb 1st year, flower 2nd, so this hot dry weather we've been having has fooled them into thinking the season is over, time to produce seeds.

One thing to remember when planting. Forget 4" apart, plant them with enough room to get the hoe in between.

Never tried growing autumn planted sets before, only spring ones. I believe you can still plant them....you'll have to try and see how they turn out. I only grow from seed now.
