I've started my sets off in 3 " pots....on the floor in the greenhouse .then will plant them out when the ground warms up a bit. I grew that variety last year Floydie; they keep very well....I've still got some left

you could plant them in modules, to start them off, in a cold greenhouse, then plant out in i would say mid to end of March.
I plant my sets out mid March. Add fish, blood & bone, or growmore a week before planting. Scrape a small hole or a drill to plant in, then backfill the soil with just the tips of the sets showing. If you plant the bulbs 6in apart with 12in between rows, you will get a larger bulb, most recommendations are to plant 4in apart but i find the bulbs will be smaller. The one problem with sets is birds tend to pull them out after planting, use a net or cloching until they get their roots down.

I've just bought some shallot sets (Red sun). I don't normally grow them, I was going to put them straight in the ground today, it says plant between Feb - April. Should I pot them up in the greenhouse and put them out after the frosts

Should I pot them up in the greenhouse and put them out after the frosts Shallots are hardy, but will stand still if it is too cold, but if you have the room in a greenhouse, you can start them off in modules.
