The few i have in pots are very disappointing this year, all though i have grown them in exactly the same way has in previous years. I can only put it down to the different compost this year.

Never grown them in pots, though i'm sure compost will make a huge difference. Is that Kelsae you grow in pots? I have heard of someone using Humax compost to grow giant onions, and gets them to a weight of 5 lbs!!!! Though the pots are the size of dustbins.... Anyway, after much panic over the allotment, this is Vento. It has a flatish bottom and is pretty uniform in shape. and this is a lot more of them After discovering the leaf miner damage i lost heart with the onions over the allotment, so what i've dug up are the results of nature at her best. I did no extra watering, no weeding, no feeding, the whole bed looked a right mess. So i guess there must be a moral to that somewhere. The classes i'll be entering are the under 8oz and a rope of 15. Got at least 15 that are at a weight between 7 and a quarter and 8 oz, so i'll try and ripen them and finally sort them 10th August.

I'm growing mine in compost (2 different kinds) the ones grown in B&Q's multi purpose are growing the best (some biggies in there well to me anyway) the others are small (whats left of them yum yum). I'm going to see how big in can get them to just for fun I'll have to post when i pull them.

Large onions tied ready for show light not so good, they aren't that yellow. Not as big as i was hoping for but not bad for uniformity. Middle back one is the one that's most wrong. and these are the under 8oz Hopefully everyone else will have suffered from onion root fly, allium leaf miner, thrips, badgers and pheasants and i may have a chance

so here they are at the show Third out of 5 for large. Bit more ripe and would have got 2nd i think as they were the most uniform of all the entries These were the winners. Nice and big, but all different sizes and skins mouldy and wrinkly. Who says i'm biased and this was our rope that came 2nd....the middle one

Well done Scrumpy, they look amazing to me.
My onions are very sad this year, after seeing Scrumpy's onions I think it would take a little more than a bit of rain to make a difference.
