Cooking Poussin tonight in white wine and a cream and mushr.... Hang on a minute, this is a Dahlia forum . Got my schedule for the Shrewsbury flower show, so will be my first ever showing event... Sh**. !4th of August, now doesn't seem that far away. Not only that, I've got to take on scrumpy, and the family!!!! Going to totally get my bottom kicked, methinks . The things I'll do to get a weekend at my brothers in Shropshire... Don't worry about scrumpy, he only grows weeds. Cannot wait for his reply now. Going to try twice as hard and put some extra entries in now that I know I have some competition

Raymond They are destined for pride of place in our garden. Even my oh is interested in our goings on for dahlias. We are starting this year with a mixed bed (12' x 3'). I have put an order into Halls. Would you like to know which? I love to know what other people are growing Cat I love many many dahlias had to sacrifice loads I wanted for the show one's. Which still beautiful don't always tickle my fancy so to speak ! Lol hehe Your son will be super excited when the plants start budding ! I have a tuber of pooh if you want another collarette . Raymond a tuber of pooh would be fantastic, thank you, so kind

OK, here's my Halls selection (got to start somewhere) Kenora sunset, bishop of Llandaff, Fairfield frost (our road name) Mary Eveline, pooh, Ruskin marigold, Johann (Che's best friend name) martins yellow (uncle!) Moonfire, yellow hammer. Spent up now but I am very pleased with my purchases. I have had to get mini plants but can grow on no problem and will help educate Che. What do you think Raymond and Tel ?

I don't really think of them as 'Chicken Legs' more of 'Chicken Wings'...
Buying chicken wings is a gamble but it is worth doing if you are prepared to accept in advance that they may fail. Oh, goodness. The three on the left would have gone in the 'probably won't make it' pile in my storage area. I don't count those in my inventory, and would be VERY hesitant to sell them without a nice sprout off each one and a grower on the other end of the deal that knows to pot them up immediately. I'm sure the supplier was looking at cutting down postage fees by sending smaller ones to you. But still... So sorry you had lousy luck. Show folks around here don't typically want the honking big tubers for their plants, but prefer tubers the size of your thumb with a sturdy neck on them at least the width of a pencil. The reason for that is the plant has less readily-available food in the tuber, and will start reaching deep with it's roots sooner. That means that fertilizer drenches will be used by the plant earlier than a plant with a small root system but a huge tuber to suck reserves off of. Pot roots have become a more popular option with the US dahlia vendors. Two-three years ago, I knew of only a couple places offering them. I've never purchased them, as I order from or trade with other hobbyists that have spares needing homes.
