I am trying to sort out which ball dahlias to grow next year and I only want to grow balls that are true balls (rather than dec balls e.g. Mary's / Jomanda)
Am going through all catalogues for ball dahlias but especially looking for good photos. It says on the Halls website that Raspberry Valliant is Does this mean that it has more of a traditional ball shape rather than bordering on the 'dec' shape?
Hi Moonlight have you looked at Ruskskin lilac time it's a true mini ball dahlia, did not make the big shows hard to match its colour , looks good in a boarder and for cut flower or exhibit in local shows.

Here's my list of plants I'm going to grow, for my first year showing, no sniggering there in the background, please
Miniature Ball Small Ball Miniature Decorative Barbarry Kestral Blyton Softer Gleam Barbarry Pip Barbarry Salsa Mary's Jomanda Barbarry Surprise Jomanda Shono Doris Blyton Golden Girl Mary's Jomanda Westerton Folly Dikaka Superb Ryecroft Laura Marston George
I've also found an allotment, that I can use from the end of April, so I'm going to grow a collection of large, medium and small, cactus and semi-cactus. I won't be showing these, as I think I'll be pushing it a bit in my first year. I'm only going to grow, between 8-10 plants of each. Light weight, I hear you cry, but I'm a virgin after all is said and done, (to showing, that is) .
A quick list of cactus and semi-cactus:- Amaran Relish, Trooper Dan, Kenora Challenger, Duncan Edwards, Wootton Impact, Clearview Louise, Hillcrest Candy, Weston Spanish Dancer, Hillcrest Jersie,Ruskin Myra, Kiwi Gloria, and Ryecroft Zoe.
Ok, you can all start laughing now .
P.S. A big thank you to everybody who helped supply many of these tubers, without you, I'd be looking forward to a stress free summer!!!!!

Hi FYI I have just been talking to Les Jackson raiser of Hillcrest Jersie he tells me He will have cuttings available @ £25 for six plants including package & postage. Hillcrest Jersie will be a banker for many people and a must if you struggle growing the Kiwis.

I didn't think that it was available yet? Hi Moonlight, We have included it in the main catalogue so mini plants will be available for this season- haven't got it on the web site yet. Raspberry Valliant is a true ball but for showing sometimes has a tendency to fade a bit at the back.
Thanks to all for the good wishes for Dad.
Just some of our 6000+ tubers set away. They were all benched up just before our Christmas break and bottom heat is now on.

This will be my 3rd year of growing and showing and the majority of my varieties I still only have single plants. I might not have enough blooms for selection at one of the National shows but I have enough to enter single vases or select 3 for a 3 bloom vase. If you start off with good quality plants and look after them well, you'll have as good a chance as anyone else of winning.
I've been really lucky and I hope that you are as well but 8 plants to me that's an enormous quantity of dahlias to grow.

Thanks for explaining that dahliadave . Does Carstone Valliant fade in the same way? I think (from somebody who doesn't have a clue what she's talking about) that the Carstone Valliant in the photo isn't as good a bloom as Raspberry which has put me off a bit from getting that one. Is it a Carstone Valliant a true ball as well?
I've grown Red Balloon for a couple of years but it can't compete with the Mary's / Jomanda at the shows that I shown at, so I want something better. There are now more ball dahlia classes at my local show and I want to give myself a fighting chance.
I've don't have a catalogue yet, hope that you don't run out of Tom before I get to order my plant.

Last year I grew nearly 70 different dahlias, Moonlight. But that was just for display, so growing a lot of one particular variety is going to be a big challenge for me. Probably fall flat on my face, but gonna give it a real go
