As I mentioned before my Dad has cut down and dug up trees from his garden before a family friend saved the day with his digger. Now I've still got my stump in the corner that I grew my ball and dec dahlias last year. The roots are still alive as they have been throwing up new growth during the dahlia flowering season.
I decided in my infinite wisdom that if my Dad can dig up trees, so would I - or least have a go.
Went down to the shed to get the pick axe out; opened the door ok to get stuff out but couldn't work out why it was not locking for me. Pulled key out only to discover that part of the key never came out of the lock. I looked at Pirate and she looked at me. Oh dear.

Question: Whats the difference between Moonshine's Dahlia tracking system, and ENIGMA, the WW2 german encryption system ? Answer: ENIGMA is only in black and white ! Left: sample of ENIGMA code Right: sample of Moonshine's tuber list Bottom: A scene at Thompson and Morgan's head office... | Bill Seedlings 2015 Update.
I now have 66 seedlings all of which have been potted up into their multicoloured pots for what feels like ages.
Last year I had Fred (1 Miniature Ball and 10 Small Ball & 2 Miniature Cactus and 4 Medium Semi-Cactus) 17 Fred Seedlings in total (+ all the ones that I gave my Dad to grow on because they were seed collected from Staleen Condessa and far too tall. I had loads and I didn't want a seedling forest.) Will less seedlings I was able to label them as:
Fred 1-2 Weston Spanish Dancer Fred 3 Downham Royal Fred 4-7 Eastwood Moonlight Fred 8 -17 Red Balloon
Not going to do it like that with Bill 1 - 66 because that is too many. Imagine: Bill 29, Bill 30, Bill, 31....... Bill 44, Bill 45, Bill 46, Bill 47 etc... sounds silly, a bit of a faff and hardly memorable.
So what I am going to have to do is have: Bill P: 1-5 (= Willo's Violet seedlings) Bill LP: 1-17 (= Nuland's Josephine seedlings) Bill D: 1-8 (= 3 Marston George and 5 Brenda T seedlings) Bill W: 1-4 (= Edwin's Sunset) But there are 32 Min/Dual/Small/Medium Cactus/ Semi Cactus, so the best that I can come up with a split between cactus Mother seed and semi cactus Mother seed. Bill C: 1-11 (= 1 Weston Pirate, 10 Weston Spanish Dancer) Bill S/C: 1-21 (= 11 Ryecroft Zoe, 2 Eastwood Moonlight and 8 Peach Delight)
Any flowers good enough to earn the status of 'Red Wool' (and be grown again next year) will be then renamed Bill 1, Bill 2, etc. for 2016, as the idea of keeping Bill P:5, Bill LP: 15, Bill D:5 doesn't work for me n.b. I am not assuming that any will be good enough to be a keeper.

Roofy you crack me up! Last night to hurry the girls up at bedtime, I told them that if they hurried up I would show them something funny on my computer. So they were quick. So I showed them your 'The things they did in the garden today' thread in Jokes and well, imagine a desert scene, the wind blowing the tumbleweed rolling in the desert and the saloon bar doors creaking. I did my best to explain the humour but well, their looks of 'you said it was funny - when we are getting to the funny bit......' I was a bit like a Children's entertainer doing magic, that the children don't think is funny.
It wasn't until I showed them the tuber parcel depot that they cracked up in hysterics. They wanted to reply but I told them that I wouldn't let them gate crash your thread.Sue you should see my Diary full of notes. Even more info than on my computer!

Mummy can I have a go...? HH, "I can't bear to watch", exit stage right, while little Miss Determined kept on having a go only stopping to scrape the mud off of her feet after she had stepped out of her clog by accident.
Not to let her sister have all the fun Fairy wanted a go... Fairy had a go but didn't find it as much 'fun' as her sister.
"Can I have another go?",
Time for a change over...
Just need to rescue my clog... Back to Fairy... Pirate offering words of advice on technique whilst holding an ice-cream... A busy day. Very proud of my little helpers.

k A family day planned organised by my Sister which included getting my Dad to drive his little blue truck with bicycles loaded to our local park. As he walked through the door, the first thing he said was "Show us your stump..." followed by "What were you using to dig it?" and "Where are they?"
Had to go back in the house to get on with getting the girls and I ready - sun screen etc. Wasn't long before I started hearing: thump, thump, thump, thud, thud, thud... coming from the garden.
And the moral of the story is never get between the stump and the Father, who is fed up and frustrated because he can't crack on with his Rotavating because his Rotavator has decided to stop working.
Dad wasn't able to get much more done as we had to go off to the park but I think if he had had of had the time, he would have been satisfied that he had at least achieved something, in what could potentially be another wasted day.
I wish I was as strong as him. I know that he is older now but even so, I wish I was as strong as he is. Better crack on. Next time I speak with him, he'll expect it done.

It's windy and it is raining. Don't know if that will make it a lot harder to dig out the root or just make it a bit more slippery. I managed to get a bit more out and HH managed to cut a bit of root with some loppers which released some more stump. Then a got hit in the face by a holly branch that rebounded on me. I'm not planning on digging up the holly which is in the very corner of the corner but if it attacks me / fights back again well .
Oh well welly boots and cost time. Be glad when it is all done.

I've just done a deal with Fairy, if she can remove the stump, I'll remove the spider from her bedroom... She said yes and marched straight out.
Pirate took this photo before Fairy began (bit depressing as is doesn't look that impressive a reduction).
So there you go Fairy is digging up the stump whilst Pirate serenades with the plastic recorder - like bagpipes but on a bad day. Our poor neighbours. At least it is raining so everyone else is indoors.

The 3 welly Ladies, were outside and have been digging in 'The Pit' as Pirate now calls it. Discussion about lava and why it is getting hot....? Started to rain. So we went in. Was really good until we had hail and I thought something along the lines of 'Chugger that, I'm taking them in.' Marched straight out (but did put purple wellies on) (but didn't bother with my coat) and took all my dahlias back in the greenhouse. Rather than have them unnecessarily ripped to shreds.
Skin stings a bit, hope my dahlias feel a lot safer inside.
Was assisted by Pirate who got her brolly out and put it over the last ones to protect them, while they waited for me to rescue them.

About 6 minutes later Fairy came in... While I was loading the dishwasher, Fairy came in to the kitchen and asked me where Pirate was. I thought that she hadn't come in from the garden but I couldn't see her from the window.
Fairy spotted her digging.
Pirate had been busy. She was using her trowel and digging out the loose soil and then flicking it over the other side. So I had a little helper, sitting in the mud, with her onesy on and school shoes; that made me want to do battle with the stump some more.
I had the big one and she carried on with the trowel.
Fairy was busy to...
"If you fall over into those dahlia plants you will be in soooooooooooooooooo much trouble!!!!" She didn't but she did skid and land on her front. n.b. Credit where it is due she did come back over to join in and help. Officially no longer digging a tree stump out, we are now 'digging a pit' (named by Pirate).
I've now reached the edge of the garden path, so I can only go a certain distance in that direction, any root that is under the path will just have to stay there. Won't be happy until we have uncovered enough of the roots surrounding the stump for us to be able to cut through them, so that we can finally get those 2 pieces of stump out.
Soil from our pit excivations has now buried the path and is encroaching on the lawn, like something in a Tom Baker Dr Who episode. HH will not be impressed but he wants that stump out as well, so that we can get it back to normal - whatever that is - it's been a long time since I remembered doing anything like that - in the garden department that is, anyway.
