On Saturday we went to a local show which is in a village near where we live. It is a much smaller show than our local town show but the exhibitors are just as passionate about their entries. The really good thing about it is the fact that there are people that grown and show their chrysanthemums. We have chrysanthemum classes but people don't enter.
These are the girls' 'Garden on a Plate' entries. They both got Highly Commended.
I didn't enter any dahlias but my Dad did.

Moonshine, please inform Pirate and Fairy that I think their Plate Gardens are fabulous. They are really imaginative, and both of them have clearly put a lot of work into them. I am very impressed !

Very clever little displays, I used to love making things like that at school, nice to see youngsters using their imagination on something other than a computer, well done girls!

Going to explain a bit more in a minute but the good thing about all there children's classes is: You don't have to win to do well. So long as you try your best.

Work has been going on with those gardens for weeks. My Dad has been collecting bits of pieces, that could be used and then showing the girls. Then they all sat down together chatting about their gardens as they made them. Grandad supplying glue, tape but it was me that thought of using the blutac. I like things like that, quality time with Grandad. It is the same with my Mum and Sister. You don't have to buy expensive toys or go on expensive trips out or flash holidays. The girls love playing Whot! with Nanny, Grandad and Aunty and cards. Although playing Hearts with Grandad generated a bit of a disagreement as there was 1 game played with 2 different rule books....

The majority of the show's classes are for double blooms rather than the more common 3. Now Dad entered I think most / all of the classes. He came 1st in the 2 small Decoratives, 2nd in the 2 miniature Dec class, 1st and 2nd in the Large semi cactus / cactus class, 2nd in the Medium semi cactus / cactus and unplaced in the small Semi Cactus / Cactus class. However I think the former judge in him came away very, very, very frustrated because of the dahlia that was awarded best vase of dahlias in the show:
Don't get me wrong if he enters, he is playing to win but he isn't a bad sport - he has no problem with being beaten by a better dahlia but the dahlia to the left of the trophy with its big green centres and heads at different angles, with the petals not going all the way back to the stem.... Lots of mutterings... next time he is going to write his entry tickets in braille......

Pirate made a tree.... out of a tree ?
I would NEVER have thought of that !!!
I love Fairy's rustic fence, and Pirates Beehive.
Actually, I love all of the bits on both of them.

The "judge" (mean this in the loosest sense.......) obviously knows nowt about dahlias....... Exactly - he or she probably doesn't have National Dahlia Society Judges doing it. While our local town show does and even judged at one of our county shows. As I pointed out to my Dad it is a small village show. If you don't like the judges decisions either don't enter or bring back something better next year. After all nobody is making him enter.
He had plenty of opportunity to get over it as it was our town show the following day.
People moaning about judges decisions is nothing new but there was something that did happen that we haven't experienced before that made me cross.
It was the morning of the show when we registered the girls garden plate entry and they carefully put them on the table top. They were looking at some of the interesting exhibits on the way out and this woman was standing by the desk where there were 2 lovely ladies that had done the entries. This woman told my girls off for touching the exhibits, in front of HH, my Dad and I. I couldn't believe it. I really couldn't believe it. Nobody has ever spoken to my children like that at a show before. I told her "No, they were not touching anything." Now anyone that knows me at all, knows that I am never disrespectful to older people but I was so cross. I want to encourage my children to join in, take active part in shows. Things like that taint peoples experience and puts them off. The woman told us off for being in the hall when the judges need to judge - n.b. It was about 10.15, you can enter up until 10.30 with an extra 15 minutes if you are late and pay double entry fee. So she was wrong on both counts. I felt angry as a parent, to think that I would let my children do something, interferre with exhibits and not tell them to stop. The girls as we walked back to the car were very indignant, "We didn't touch anything Mummy, we really didn't". According to my girls I used a voice that I don't usually use but I was no rude or agressive but I wasn't prepared to let her say that. I did point out to them that the thing is we don't know what it is like in her life, maybe something had happened to one of her exhibits in the past - you just don't know.
When we went back, the smiliey ladies appologised for the other woman's rudeness. They had already appologised to my Dad before we had arrived. She was nothing to do with the show itself and had no place to say anything at all and no grounds either as they knew that our girls hadn't done anything wrong. Apparently she is on the council..... nuff said really.
Girls were ok but I don't think that they will be so keen to enter next year - mind you unlike our town show - there was no fun size chocolate bar next to each child's entry.
Sunday well that was a different story....
More photos to edit.

They would have looked a bit more hanging lanternie if they were hanging from their ribbons but there you go.
Fairy came 1st
Pirate came 2nd. As a family if being 100% honest I think we would have given it the other way - Fairy's has a Christmasy Message on the handle but Pirate has made Holly, Christmas crackers, Christmas trees etc from glitter, so maybe but judges decision is final and all that but it was Fairy herself that told me that. Me I am just happy that they both finished them. The concept was easy but the instructions were very detailed. Gaps of 10cm measured and 25mm on the sides etc. Glad that they persevered and finished them.

Potato Head class - girls came up with a massive list of ideas and had there been time, then they both would have made 2 entries. Fairy came 1st with her Angry Bird
Pirate came 2nd with her Stuart Minion. (It has a red name label on it but I had to crop it out because you can see her name next to it which is a shame).
Both potatoes were a real challenge because they decided to make them 3D. Bluetac to the rescue, especially on the Angry Bird's eyes.
