Fairy came 1st
Pirate came 2nd
3rd was Fairy with the gold and silver ribbons on the handle Highly Commended for Pirate's basket with the bright red 'Made with Love' heart.
All 4 lovely - very tough one to call - a lot of laughter and an awful lot of chocolate went into each one of these.

They look gorgeous. You have taught them to think about their capabilities and overcome problems which they must have encountered. What will they do when they leave school? Your girls are talented and they seem to be good all-rounders. You manage to put the time into your family. I always think it is more about time than money.

Now the thing that I am most chuffed to bits with is their 'grow a vegetable' class which they wouldn't have done if it hadn't have been for my Garden Friends who replied to my emergency - sos Help what is the fasted growing Vegetable post.
We knew before we picked them that we had achieved our mission impossible...
Radishes in the hot tub...
We agree with the judges - we know that presetation is very important to the judges eye! Although a lot more nibbled, Fairy's was more uniformed where as Pirate was a bit more decorated. So 1st for Fairy at the back on the pink tray and 2nd for Pirate on the yellow tray.
Very proud.

And now for the Fairy's dahlias... We had one very, very happy Little Big Girl when she found out that she had won 1st and 2nd for her Hillcrest Hannah dahlias. Last year there were 3 entries in the Novice dahlia class. Pirate was thrilled to bits when she beat the grown ups when she came 1st. They've changed the title to 'New Competitor' classes and this time there were no other entries but as we all know they don't automatically give out 1sts or 2nds. She also went on to win a £5 prize for best New Competitor exhibit. Fantastic. So that little girl who nearly gave up last year because her dahlias were late with my seedlings getting in the way of her dahlia - (n.b. Lesson learnt Never again) is very, very, very glad that she didn't stop.

The "judge" (mean this in the loosest sense.......) obviously knows nowt about dahlias....... Exactly - he or she probably doesn't have National Dahlia Society Judges doing it. While our local town show does and even judged at one of our county shows. As I pointed out to my Dad it is a small village show. If you don't like the judges decisions either don't enter or bring back something better next year. After all nobody is making him enter.
He had plenty of opportunity to get over it as it was our town show the following day.
People moaning about judges decisions is nothing new but there was something that did happen that we haven't experienced before that made me cross.
It was the morning of the show when we registered the girls garden plate entry and they carefully put them on the table top. They were looking at some of the interesting exhibits on the way out and this woman was standing by the desk where there were 2 lovely ladies that had done the entries. This woman told my girls off for touching the exhibits, in front of HH, my Dad and I. I couldn't believe it. I really couldn't believe it. Nobody has ever spoken to my children like that at a show before. I told her "No, they were not touching anything." Now anyone that knows me at all, knows that I am never disrespectful to older people but I was so cross. I want to encourage my children to join in, take active part in shows. Things like that taint peoples experience and puts them off. The woman told us off for being in the hall when the judges need to judge - n.b. It was about 10.15, you can enter up until 10.30 with an extra 15 minutes if you are late and pay double entry fee. So she was wrong on both counts. I felt angry as a parent, to think that I would let my children do something, interferre with exhibits and not tell them to stop. The girls as we walked back to the car were very indignant, "We didn't touch anything Mummy, we really didn't". According to my girls I used a voice that I don't usually use but I was no rude or agressive but I wasn't prepared to let her say that. I did point out to them that the thing is we don't know what it is like in her life, maybe something had happened to one of her exhibits in the past - you just don't know.
When we went back, the smiliey ladies appologised for the other woman's rudeness. They had already appologised to my Dad before we had arrived. She was nothing to do with the show itself and had no place to say anything at all and no grounds either as they knew that our girls hadn't done anything wrong. Apparently she is on the council..... nuff said really.
Girls were ok but I don't think that they will be so keen to enter next year - mind you unlike our town show - there was no fun size chocolate bar next to each child's entry.
Sunday well that was a different story....
More photos to edit.
I told my Husband about that "silly woman"....his comment was "jobsworth"........

Now I feel cross on behalf of all of you. That was a good word your husband used to describe the lady from the council and I have only heard it in England. Results are good and the prize money might buy some seeds for next year.

This morning: HH: (Insert daughter's name) is going to have to take have her coat to school today. Me: Why is it going to rain today? HH: It already is. Me: Oh, well it would do wouldn't it, we've got a show coming up. HH: There was me worrying about you getting wet and the 1st thing you think of is dahlias! Me: (feeling more than a bit embarrassed)Erm but it has been like that each time a show approaches, we have had rain.
Each time it has ruined all my medium, large and giant. Haven't been able to show anything bigger than a small this year. No covers = more than likely ruined dahlias.

It is now absolutely pelting down. Might as well go pluck the petals off of Challenger now. It will be black with marks by tomorrow.

I just want to say Thank You to all of you that have posted such kind and positive messages for my family. Every thing that I read one I tell the girls and it really means something to them and your kind and supportivie posts mean a lot to me to.
Thank you (and in no particular order but...) grindle p.s. I like your emoticon - going to add that one to my list of smilies... Cherry, Lou78W, markb, ian, roofgardener (aka Roofy), SueA. Your comments on being creative mean a lot, Pirate could paint until the cows come home, she is very creative, where as Fairy gets stressed because she doesn't think that she can do it. As a parent you can praise your children up for things that they have done well or things that they can do but as a child is is sometimes very hard to believe it when you are blinkered by lack of confidence. I think part of the battle is to believe in yourself.
The girls have a column of drawers (and I) where we put things in when we are trying to get organised. I change them around a bit and then I make up some new labels. I've now got a gardening draw, with plant labels sellotaped on it. Another new one is 'Believe and Achieve' - I've started putting things like swimming badges, attendance certificates, dance exam results etc. etc. inside and I've been encouraging the girls to look through the drawer when they are doubting themselves or feeling down. I think I will add a sheet with all your comments, so that they can make the girls when they need to feel it.
Roofy in answer to your question - No you cannot have a truffle but I can give you the receipe and yes the girls are dangerous with the pick axe - thingy (excuse the technical terminology).Totally agree with your husband the woman was a' jobsworth' which is ironic considering she wasn't actually involved in the running of the show at all. HH pointed out that it was 10 in the morning so no where near the registration deadline for show entries.
Lou78w I am very happy to say that it was Fairy that found my bag for me.
I am a very Lucky woman with a husband so loving and supportive. Having to live with me, the girls and of course the dahlias - is a massive challenge. With my parents and sister living just a few miles away.
Very Lucky - Very Blessed.
Thank You Moonlight
