^^^ what Lou78w said ^^^^ I went to the Gedling Show on Sunday (6th), which includes a Horticultural Show + Competition. There was a similar story to be told; there where not many entries for ANY of the classes, with some having only 1 or 2, and some zero ! My eye was particularly caught by the weak attendance (and feeble vegetables) in the Novice class. Myself, my Parents, and Miss M may be looking to form a Consortium next year, and take the show by storm ! This I think is a very good idea - looking forward to reading all about it. The highs, the lows and the controversy - in your Diaries.(n.b. Roofy is set to start a double blog.

Moonshine, I held off commenting for the last page or so as I realised the last dozen posts are a "work in progress" narrative, and I wanted it to reach the end first. I will echoe Ians comments; Pirate and Fairy are very clever and imaginative, and skilled beyond their years. Their wonderful display pieces - from the individual flowers, vegetables, truffles, and - of course - those amazing miniature gardens - are fabulous. It is a great credit to yourself and Hubby that you have spent the time and energy in encouraging and supporting them. Plus... I wish I'D been allowed to play with pick-axes when I was their age. I had to make do with chain-saws. In regard the impact of the rain on your Dhalia's; have you considered - in all seriousness - getting a polytunnel to complement your existing greenhouse, and growing at least SOME of the (potential) show items inside it ? You could even get a couple of smaller walk-in PVC "tent" greenhouses for Pirate and Fairy to get up to mischief in ? Sort of.... PolyTroubles ?

Oh I do like that'Poly Troubles.' erm but you are right - I haven't finished the update. I've yet to do me Dad's dahlias.

After a truly rubbish day at work one the most stressful and depressing ones I have had in a long time, I am going to try and cheer myself up.

My Dad won the Dahlia Cup for most points in the dahlia classes. and the Pom Man won the NDS Silver medal for best dahlia exhibit. Now obviously I want my Dad to win but I think that this is the best result because the Pom Man has been so sick with cancer etc, he even gave up his allotment and wasn't going to grow anything - let alone his beloved dahlias but someone very kind said he would share his allotment with him, the Pom Man's health improved and his love for life and competition returned. So I am very happy for him and I will be clapping my loudest clap as I can when the both go up for trophy presentation night. I am sure that it is the same for many people with a passion for something as strong as it is for people like my Dad and the Pom Man - you take away their dahlias and it is like something dies in your heart.
Wishing them both many, many, many more competitions and like I always say - may the best Dahlia win and no controversial decisions made.

I haven't got photos of all of my Dad's dahlia exhibits - nb remember I'd lost my bag at the time = no camera = no photos = relying on the girls' cameras.
My Dad came 2nd. This one is a 2015 seedling, hadn't even got its red wool but Dad like it and exhibitied it in the Medium Dec single bloom class.
Tel here is your Birkinshaw Wyn's Favourite came 1st. Dad wants me to tell you that these 3 beautiful blooms came from one plant. Thank You so much. p.s. Hope you have entered it at Harrogate.

The sun has finally come out, had that same harsh pelting rain this morning. Recks chances for me to have anything worth cutting for exhibiting. Disappointing yes but at least I was able to exhibit in some of the other shows.
Going to have a look now before it begins pelting down. It is horrible that type of rain when it stings your face it is that hard.
