On a happier note. When we went to the Annual show my Dad was talking to me about Avoca Amanda as he had been told that it is pretty weather proof. A man who was standing beside us joined in and said, I know a variety that is weather proof.... Mary's Jomanda. At which point my heart sunk.
He took us over to his exhibit of ball dahlias. One of his exhibit's vase was a vase of 3 red balls and I said that I liked that. He said that it was Carstone Valliant and told him that that was one that I wanted to try as an alternative to Mary's Jo. He asked me if I was going to go to the next show and when I said that yes I was, he promptly told me that he would dig me up a tuber and give it to me then.
You know what, with all the sadness, anger and greed in this world - there are still some truly wonderful generous kind hearted people out there.
Special people - like him.
I hope that I can grow it well and be even happier if I can beat a Mary's / Jo along the way.

Moonlight I have found senzoe Ursula pretty weather proof in terms of damping off etc.... You need to cane the stems though but I will grow it again next year. Of all my mediums candy and Ruskin Michelle took the weather the best. For a small semi cactus Ruskin Andrea takes the weather superbly. Zero damping off no split petals tough flower.

Now I know of no plans to move but I was asked today by Fairy if our garden was half an acre - I replied er no. What if we had next doors garden as well. Er no. Why? Daddy said that you need about half an acre to grow your dahlias. Oh
I guess that we had better start doing the Lotto.

A little bird has asked me if I had any more photos of my Dad's seedlings to share.
Bit torn between starting up a fresh Dad's seedling thread or adding them here. I've decided to go with putting them here because particularly in the ball and now pom department - I'm on the hunt for an alternative to the usual winners... So I am going to put them here and make a fresh thread later (I'm not thinking today) and put all his seedlings together.
Anyway feel free if you want to skip a post...

It is a bit of a forest. He planted about 1,500 1st year seedlings (although I've included about 200 which didn't get the chance to flower last year). Dad is ruthless anything that he thinks isn't good enough he pulls out straight away. So there is a lot less than it would be. There are also a couple of plants that he tried out from US all of which have been rubbish or virused. nb He didn't row all the seed collected. I think for him the challenge for him is the search for a good seedling. Rather than the competition at shows.

Moonlight 's blog is always worth reading. It's a bit Dahlia-focussed sometimes, and it hardly EVER mentions Onions, mind you But the antics of Pirate and Fairy more than make up for that

humpf, I've just been asked by HH if we are going to be growing Onions this year.
Maybe he wants to start making Fermented Onion juice which surprises me as he is more of a Cider drinker. Maybe that is how you could market it Roofy, 1st there was (Real) Cider then some bright spark thought of fermenting pears and instead of calling it Babycham started marketing it as Pear Cider (Very much to my Husband's disgust).
Well if they can do it with Pears, why not Onions?
Anyone fancy a glass of
Onion Cider?
mwahahahaha
