Cat don't stop posting your photos on this thread it isn't like the Premiership football where only they are considered the best and your goal becomes promotion to the top tier. It is more about enjoying dahlias without getting bogged down with all the exhibition lingo clock faced, moon faced - daisy eyed. etc. Some varieties have been identified as suitable for exhibition and for a cactus, ball, pom or dec to be 'daisy eyed' isn't a good thing. But for people that grow varieties just because they like them, colour etc - it doesn't matter if a dahlia is daisy eyed or not - you just like it because you do.
You can have the WOW!!! Factor garden dahlia or exhibition dahlia - makes no difference. One isn't better than the other. Who is to say which one is best. It all boils down to personal taste and tastes change.
p.s. Just because someone grows a dahlia which has been identified as suitable for exhibition doesn't mean that that is why people grow them. People grow the dahlias that they find attractive. Just like people that grow dahlias that haven't been identified as suitable for showing - people grow them because they think a variety is attractive. I grew a miniature dec called 'Happy Halloween' because I loved the bright Halloween pumpkin colour it.
I grew Candy Jayne because I like the fact that it looked like someone had thrown a paint tin at it.
Neither any good in shows in this country but it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy growing them.
This year pretty much all my Dahlias would be considered varieties that could be shown. Who knows about next year.
