Copied and pasted from the Dahlia Seedlings 2016 thread. When I collected the seeds I got confused with the seeds from Ryecroft Zoe, Greenways Zoe, Oakwood Goldcrest and Cherwell Goldcrest - so I put them in the same envelope and labeled them 'Zoe Crest'. Not being an expert I would describe Ruskin Myra and Ryecroft Zoe as similar (yellowy/peachy small semi/cactus). Last year I collected seed from both Ryecroft Zoe and Ruskin Myra and because they looked similar to me and I decided to just go for the Zoe because I thought that slightly darker shade of orange looked nicer than the Myra. I didn't grow it at all this year* - I gave the tuber to my Dad. I decided to sow my 2014 Myra seed; if you look at it I think that the seeds look drier / older than the 2015 Zoe Crest seeds. How to attempt to make something simple ultra complicated.
'I didn't grow it at all this year' - I didn't grow any in 2015 derr brain

I'm growing quite a few new varieties this year, as I've got multicoloured labels, I've been colour coding them by type but not size. Purple Labels: My balls (ooh er Mrs) Pink Labels: My Decs Yellow Label: Pom: Pop Willo Blue Label: Anemone: Blue Bayou Red Labels: Waterlilly: Orange Labels: Collerette
I don't have any semi/cactus plants yet but I am guessing that when I do, they'll get stuck with green labels as it is the only colour that I have left. Pity really because I don't like green and semi/cactus classifications.
My intention is to colour code my seedlings by the parent varieties.
No idea how long I'm going to stick with this but it will help sort out things in my mind. Then I will spend less time squinting at the labels with the sun in my eyes and more time doing something else.
Well that was last year, this year my plan is: Where possible I am saving yellow labels for Pirate Yellow Wellies and pink labels for Fairy Pink Wellies plants. (Where I can anyway). Orange Labels: Semi/Cactus (My Dad is using yellow for those, would have gone with that but Pirate...) Blue: for my Balls (well it made me laugh anyway). Red: for my Waterlily - same as last year, Green: for my Collerettes which is probably my least favourite type of dahlias (and green is my least favourite colour) Purple: for my Decs. Have not sown any Poms or Anemone seed. Currently saving coloured labels for my seedlings, rather than the tubers and plants. Past tubers are still labelled with their last year coloured labels.
Which brings me to a bit of problem a rather big problem: Writing the labels themselves.
I can't find my black labelling pens and the sharpie ones fade so I wanted to get what I was using before. The only place that I found where I could get multipuls of them is in Germany. All was going really well until I placed the order and received my confirmation email. Copied it and pasted it into online translater only to discover that I hadn't ordered black - I've ordered blue. (Happy it was blue and not green or red). Dad not happy about it, he is concerned that they will fade. I pointed out that he still has his black ones to use, I haven't, writing labels in regular pencil and biro is a mission impossible in itself. At least I will be able to clearly label them at the beginning and hopefully at some point I will discover where I safely filed my black ones.
They posted off same day of ordering but don't know when they will get here, order said beginning of May.
I'll keep you posted.

Seedlings that haven't woken up yet are: Taratahi Ruby, Edwin's Sunset, Sir Alf Ramsey, Kenora Valentine, Trengrove Millenium, Weston Pirate, 'Zoe Crest', Downham Royal, Blyton Softer Gleam, Barbarry Pip and Marston Lilac but the ones that I wish would hurry up and wake up are the girls seedlings. nb I never take it for granted that there will be any seedlings so I'm doing well and am very happy with what I've got now but I just don't want the girls to end up disappointed.

I miss Tel so much, especially now, Tel and his passion for his seedlings. Also so supportive and encouraging with my seedlings and we shared updates on how ours were doing. We were cheering each other on. That is why this year I am calling my seedlings Tel. Last year my seedlings were Bill and the year before was Fred. This year I want to call them Tel because I am going to miss his posts but at least I'll have him as moral support, always there and the idea made me smile rather than feel sad. I have no plans to name a dahlia after him, it is more important the seedling 'journey' (for want of a better term) cheering me on, moral support. There are lots of people here growing dahlias for their gardens and many who are planning on competing but Tel shared my passion and I hope that there are more members out there who are collecting seeds and sowing seeds in the hope of discovering something special. I think that it would be great if there were more members having a go, for more next year. For me it doesn't matter if you sow 1 seed or 1,000, there is no guarantee that you raise anything but it is exciting. I hope that you understand.

I think that is a WONDERFUL thought Moonlight. Thank You for saying that Roofy. I wanted to express how I felt before I just went ahead and put the Class of 2016 photos and name up. Don't want to offend anyone.

Moonlight I'm not sure exactly what it is but I think you have what some folk might call an obsession about dahlias Just hope you have the ruthless streak to be able to discard the non runners or you will have nowhere to move in your garden.

That looks REALLY organised Moonlight. Well done ! I have a secret ! I opened a BOX this weekend. It contained potatoes. I planted them in my BIGEST and DEEPEST trough. They came with a little purple stick.... and a piece of purple tinsel. (photograph to follow).

Moonlight spoils you, roofgardener , doesn't she, but it is lovely to get happy parcels in the post, rather than those nasty bills in envelopes.
