Yesterday I put the two meta-posts in for my new runner bean supports. I was a bit too enthusiastic with the sledge hammer and managed to break the path while leavering them back out again. Concrete mixer will be out today ;D Are those the ones that once you put the wooden post in it won't come out? I assume that you're having a bar between the posts to secure the canes. I know a seasoned gardener who's posts are at an angle of 2 o'clock as are all the canes. I thought I'd try it this year but I've promised myself not to sow so many. It's beautiful here though I don't fancy any cementing yet.

What a fantastic day. I concreted in my two metaposts (yes merlin, once they are in they are in) and finished off the path beside the veg beds. Lots of exercise, fresh air and a good dose of vitamin D, it doesn't get much better. Merlin, you can just see the posts, one is at the end of the path and the other just past the step ladder. They are both vertical (put in with a spirit level), when the concrete has set I shall fix a horizontal support across the top to hold the canes. The row is about three feet shorter than it was, hopefully I won't grow as many beans now.

That one in the path looks like it's leaning, I'd better go and check it before the cement goes off.

Panic over, it looks straight when you are down there and the spirit level says it is spot on. I measured it from base to base and top to top to be absolutely sure and it is straight and parallel.

Marked out where i want the beds on the new allotment today. Now have enough room for 400 dahlia plants with a little bit of spare capacity.

Went out and cut back yet more perennials and did some more weeding. I couldn't walk across the grass to get anywhere much, though - it's still frosted! Isn't it amazing that weeds are frost-proof. I pulled out lots of goose-grass seedlings and my arch enemy - Hairy Bittercress! I found baby nettles, as well. My new Hydranges looks poorly - I can't see any buds on it.

They are my main problem and like yours, they're doind well.

WF, I hope you've covered that concrete in case of frost. I'm full of admiration over your cement raised beds, they put mine to shame. Did you lay footings, if so how deep?
