What are you going to do with so many tomato seedling, ladybird? Good question balc2, many are compact so lots of pots, I`ll bring a few and plant in the polytunnel in our local "allotment learning area " a few to family and friends though that will be a small number . Many will have to be tossed , in fact one of the best tomato plants last year grew in a bucket in the greenhouse that I use to dump stuff for the compost bin.

That was a shame! I may have a similar problem although I've tried to sow only as many seeds as plants I need. Yet we nearly always have to sow more seeds than plants we need in case some don't germinate or die for whatever reason.

Yes balc2 its a pity to destroy good seedlings .There is a Northern Ireland garden face book group so I could post some on there . Maybe even sell them for 50p for charity ( though don't know if that legal or not )

Maybe even sell them for 50p for charity ( though don't know if that legal or not ) There are no rules against selling your own self sown plants in the UK. I do that with many of my plants. the only plants you are not supposed to sell are those with Plant breeder's rights. That tends to be perennial plants. No sign of my toms yet though my cucumber was up in 5 days.

My tomato seeds began to germinate this morning! The seeds of 'Gardeners Delight' I bought last year were the first to germinate. The other ones I sowed at the same, also 'Gardeners Delight', I was sent from someone on another gardening forum have begun to germinate but at least half a day later & not all of them - at least for the moment. I'll leave the heat on for tonight but tomorrow I'll turn it off though the cover, with the ventilation grill open, will stay on for a few more days.
A couple of photos from this morning - though they are not very sharp!

all but 2 of mine have too, I'll move them out of the heated propagator today, so it looks as though we both managed around the same germination

They normally take about 3 days for me in the heated propagator as well. This morning I turned the heating off as the seeds from the person on another gardening forum have mostly germinated as well. I don't think there are any seeds from the ones I bought online last year that haven't germinated. But they get lanky so fast it's unbelievable! But I shan't be taking them out of the propagator itself, I'll just take the cover off tomorrow. Did you see I also put in some Fuchsia cutting? If they root I'll be inundated with 'Garden News'! I already have my standard Fuchsia forming its head! The cutting in fact were the 'pinchings' (is there such a word???) from the standard Fuchsia!

Good to hear they have begun to germinate seaburn. Today I removed a few more seedlings before they develop their true leaves as I have far too many for the balcony. I can't manage more than 10-12 plants max. on the balcony! If I leave too many I won't be able to give them away & then I will feel sorry about throwing them away! I haven't asked my son yet, but I'm hoping he'll take a couple of my hands, as may my daughter.

The two sets of tomato seeds I sowed on 21st March are doing well. The 1st set, (which were from seeds I bought online last year) germinated a day & a half before the 2nd set of seeds, (which came from somebody on another gardening forum), & the difference is more visible now. The first set are now growing their true leaves whereas the other set they are barely visible as yet. The 2nd set are also a little shorter than the first set. I don't suppose that such a little difference will affect them later when I put them in the growbags for the summer.

mine are growing well, I have lost a couple but the rest are fine, I'm still keeping them in the heated propagator as the night time temperatures are still quite low, but I open them up during the day

Mine are in our kitchen still & will probably stay there a while longer. Like you say grindle the nights are too cold still to leave them outside. They are forming their true leaves now.

I've bought two plants - Shirley and Tumbling tom. I'll buy Roma and maybe Gardeners Delight if I can see them. Since I am here on my own now I don't need many.
