I love that bark, bit too big for me though I'm not supposed to go over 25ft, although by the time it gets to that height, I'll either be too old to bother or dead ;D ;D

My big Acer didn't make it through the Winter The two that are in the side garden are o.k though What do you put that down to? The one that died was planted in the back garden but the other two have more shelter in the side garden

I'm a little worried about my 'Snake skin' acer, it loves it where it is and is now huge. I was taking some photos of the bark which is developing beautifully. It is also covered in flowers and the leaves are all looking healthy. But right down at the base of the trunk I noticed this dark patch, do you think it is something nasty? It can't be cut out and it is almost around the whole trunk.

It could just be the colouring of ageing, is it green under the dark bark?

I hate to say it but it looks a bit like what happened to my 'Orange Dream' (deceased) Someone on here suggested it could be Verticulum wilt, I hope not but I'm not at all sure. I've asked the team on GQT so next time they're answering questions in the Potting shed they might tell us. On the plus side the foliage on mine was suffering but yours looks ok so fingers crossed.

It could just be the colouring of ageing, is it green under the dark bark? Unfortunately it is very dead under the bark. It has gone half way around the trunk. The tree is about seven feet tall now and looking magnificent so it would be a shame to lose it. I read about verticillium wilt and mine is not showing the symptoms associated with that disease.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, it is looking very healthy apart from that. Perhaps I will pop along to GQT and ask them.
The bark is beautiful, the older it gets the more pronounced the 'snake skin' becomes.

Steve's link is interesting. It would be such a shame if you lost it. It would be reassuring to hear something positive from GQT. I wonder if it could be something to do with the cold, I have similar markings on a few roses.

I have a small acer bought from Wilkinson's several years ago. I bought two and the label said that after a few years they could be planted in the ground. Last year I planted one (a lovely variegated variety), digging ericaceous compost into the soil...but it died quite quickly. I don't know whether it was weakened by it's years in a pot coupled with a severe winter (planted it in early spring when it was in bud)...so now I daren't plant the other one! any advice...?

Oh dear! guess what I bought from Wilkies today, yes another Acer, an 'Orange Dream' to replace the one I lost. There's no fool like an old fool, will I never learn, good thing it was only £2.50. cheerypeabrain it looks like we have the same soil
