Is this the one you planted in the corner? Maybe it was too old to be replanted unless it was already in a pot.

That is the one Cherry, it wasn't in a pot but I did dig it out with a large root ball. It was a tough winter to cope with after just being moved.
The only reason I think I might have some sort of disease which is effecting them is because of my huge 'snake skin' acer which is going the same way. This one has been in the ground for a good few years and is 10+ feet tall and well established.

I really feel for you WF. You are blessed with soil which will grow these beautiful trees and then this happens. It doesn't seem fair.

So do I, it is a beautiful tree. I went back to the GS yesterday where I bought the small ones. The head plantsman said exactly the same as Cherry, I should have molly-coddled them for a while until they were larger. I did point out if that is what was required, the information should have been on the label. He agreed and said I could have a credit note for one of them. Replacing one is better than none

Most GCs give some of guarantee. No they don't. What am I saying? My nearest GC wouldn't. Wilkinsons and many other retailers give a guarantee. They are a great shop, but there is nothing established in there. Their plants are all very young.

<snip> I've never understood why the 'experts' say you should always pot-up in a slightly larger pot (I haven't ) as I didn't want them to blow over. What's the point as if I planted direct into the ground it would be like a very big pot.[/quote] That is on the assumption the plant will be kept in a pot. Potting up = Planting in a pot Potting on = Transferring to larger pot Potting back = Transferring to smaller size pot. Re potting = Moving to another pot Planting out = Planting in open ground Its all to do with the (Artificial) method of growing plants out of their natural environment, ie open ground.
