I have two small Acers, one I think Steve has called Orange glow (I think) and the other 'Sango Kaku'. The latter is looking fabulous but the other has suffered even though it's older. Though it is alive and shooting the tips of the branches are dead and it the main branches have dark areas on them. Any idea what's up with it?

Are they in pots Merlin, because they do prefer acidic or neutral soil? Are they close together for a comparison? I have A. Orange Dream which is very small but looking good. As it is alive, I expect it is weather related. You will need to prune off the offending branches.

And this is the Orange dream. Sorry I've forgotten how to upload two pics, a senior moment I hope! Anyway as you'll see the Orange Dream is way behind and looking poorly.

You're probably right about the weather but they're only 5' from eachother. Last year (it's second) the Orange Dream did very well. It's only recently that it's branches have discoloured.

Mine are the other way round Merlin, Orange dream is full of leaf, Acer palmatum is still fairly bare...they do open up at different times but like Cherry says cut off dead wood, most of them get some sort of die back on branch tips and some lose whole branches

The free one I was given last year is doing well and has flowers, I didn't know they flowered.

Scary reading! Especially as I lost a Cotinus that had similar symptoms. I'll do as suggested and cut out all dead bits and keep fingers crossed.

one of my large acers has a lot of dieback this year too, I'll have to look closer at it as I just thought it was due to the bad weather too

Not sure what to do with my 'Orange dream' now as what few small leaves were growing are now withered. I've potted it up and bagged up all the surrounding soil for the tip. If it had verticillium wilt then there's not much I can replace it with. Trouble is I can't be sure if it was. Replacing it could turn out expensive!

My Orange Dream was £4.95 last year and you should see it now. That is not expensive. My red dissectum whatever was even cheaper from Wilkinsons about three years ago. They need not cost a lot.

I'm pleased to hear that you're all unaffected and that your Acers are doing ok. I'll look out for another small one, maybe Wilkies. Meanwhile I was at a GC today and couldn't resist a Magnolia for £10. It's 6ft tall, one inch thick with 2 or 3 buds on the trunk. It has several big yellow/primrose buds around the top. No idea what it is. It would go where the Acer was but I would prefer an Acer to match one on the other side of the path. I bought 4 large bags of multi purpose £12 (probably last years) so I may replace a lot more soil and add some feed.
