I am very fond of Roses and as we are getting close to the flowering season, I wondered what our members' favourites are, and what preparation is being made - fertilizer, etc.
I think this could be a good year for them if mine are a guide.
This subject was prompted by a floribunda called Happy Retirement, which has suddenly decided it would like to be a climber of six feet this year. It has sent up two thick canes to this height, when I normally prune it to about 80 cm. I fed it last year and I think it liked it.

I've only got two climbing roses Cherry, a dark pink against the fence which was here, and 'The Generous Gardener' a David Austin rose against the arch, pale pink with heavy scent. I fed them both last week

I like roses too - I like Dublin Bay, Albertine, Zepherine Drouhin & Paul's Scarlet climbers, Prima Ballerina, Champagne Moment, Rhapsody in Blue and Blue for You, and my two patio roses - Caribbean Dawn - are lovely too. I love my Rosa banksia lutea too. I've recently planted 'Darcey Bussell' and two pink Flower Carpet roses. I inherited a few, and they will have to remain anonymous! I have ID'd 'Kiftsgate' and 'Ballerina' but can't name the others. They all got blood, fish and bone earlier when I pruned them. Normally they'd get some rotted manure as a mulch, too - but we've run out.

Lou, you have a lovely picture of the Alnwick Castle Rose. Why not brighten this thread up with that when you have some time.

I love roses too and intend to have quite a few in this garden. I have 3 David Austin roses so far, the Crocus rose, which was in the garden at May, i wasn't leaving that behind and has settled in well so far, Also i just recently got Lady of Shallott and St Swithin. they were on offer in one of the gardening mags, well Lady of Shallott was and St Swithin just happened to find it's way into my basket ;D I had Albertine and New Dawn at May. Albertine has vicious thorns but smells wonderful and new dawn was a lovely pink and flowered well.

I have Albertine on a shed. This is very pretty and scented, but it is not self cleaning and I end up with a lot of dead roses on a large rambler, hence its planting by a shed. I think New Dawn is much better for the same purpose.

It would seem that Albertine is popular. I like them all but have favourites, For perfume Mme Alfred Carriere and 'Mum in a million' Small climber has to be 'Open Arms' I've 4 now!. Too many T's to say but I have a rich yellow that doesn't fade 'Freedom' I've had to replace it this year. My overall favourite Rose has to be Pink Perpetue.

It's good to have recommendations Merlin and some of those are new to me. I like that and will have to look them up.
