I am not too worried about WF. You have more faith than us we wandered along the rows of roses at the GS, We sniffed a few that were the right colour but smelt of nothing, smelt some heavenly ones which were the wrong colour, we didn't like the ones with loads of little flowers or the ones with huge blousy flowers and the others were just green so we bought a fern [/color] Very similar to a rose then. ;D

I find that a good way to grow a rose is to do it for free. I have a rose called 'Open Arms' it never looks good in site pics but I think it's fabulous and is perfect for an obelisk. I now have 5 as I simply stuck cuttings in where I wanted it and hey presto!! I grew SPs for the first year until it got bigger. Please don't give up WF there's nothing like roses, they grow on you

I would like a rose is just a little to vague to expect practical advice.

We went to my favourite Rose specialists today to but a Mme Riene Victoria...........you' ve already guessed it, we came away with three !!! We caught a whiff of Gertrude and she leaped onto the cart ;D While queuing at the till the Lady in front had a cart full and I spotted an almost thornless one that spoke to me! It said my friend is now the only one left and all alone. I just had to go back and save her. She is called 'Mortimer Sackler' So, I now have three shrub Roses and am thrilled to bits.

well I've just come back from the Garden Festival in Tavistock, and guess what?? I just bought a rose, I saw Reine Victoria, but came home with Comte de Chambord, a damask, repeat flowerer, which she assured me will be fine on my sort of soil

That looks absolutely gorgeous. A Portland Damask which has not had its original attributes bred out of it. Are you pleased you had started your homework on roses? Did we help? Love it.
