Foliage and stems look remarkably like an Olive tree I think.

I've got a Sorbiria in a large pot and it looks great. Fothergilla is fussy about soil and I even suspect that it doesn't even like my water. It's a beautiful shrub though, lucky you to be able to enjoy it's gorgeous autumn colours.

This will sound silly, but I have Sorbaria sem and I regard it as a 'nothing' plant, pretty for a short time only and useful as a gap filler.

Even after flowering I still like it.

Not at all silly Cherry, that is right for you, peoples eyes see plants differently, personally it is the different shades of ferny foliage I like (being a lover of ferny foliage)

Flowering Merlin? Mine has never flowered. It is about 3 or more years old too. No wonder I think it is quite useless. Looks better in your garden.

Mine flower, Cherry - but the flowers are a different shape and size to the ones on Merlin's shrub - I'm wondering if he has a Sobaria, but not 'Sem'.

And mine (Sorbaria) just suffered very badly from windburn It never looked good, always brown, dry and crispy leaf edges
