The damage on the leaves look like capsid bug damage. When spraying for them you will have to spray around the plant as they do jump of the plants. They tend to chew or eat new growth and unfortunately their saliva deforms the growing cells and cause leaves to be deformed and if the chew on developing buds they will also grow deformed. Hope this is of some use.

CHEERS MARK I WILL DO THAT . NEED TO ORDER LOTS OF STUFF SHORTLY ANYWAY I NEED TO START PREP WORK FOR MY NEW BEDS IN THE FRONT AND ANOTHER IN THE BACK (THAT ONE NOT FOR DAHLIAS NOT ENOUGH LIGHT)) SO I NEED LARGE QTY OF MANURE COMPOST AND SOME OTHER BITS. WILL CHECK OUT THE PRICES OF HEATED PROPAGATORS AS IN THE LONG RUN WILL BE MORE COST EFFECTIVE FOR ALL MY PLANTS FROM SEED AND SEEDLINGS. SICK OF GOING INTO HOMEBASE AND B AND Q AS I ALWAYS END UP COMING OUT WITH STUFF I DONT REALLY NEED !!! LET ALONE THE GARDEN CENTRES COULD NOT BELIEVE THE PRICES LATELY FOR EXAMPLE A POTTED DAHLIA BEDDING AT 12 QUID ! NOT EVEN VERY NICE EITHER ALL SLUG DAMAGED.
I USE THOMPSON AND MORGAN QUITE A LOT AND UNWINS JUST FOR BASIC PLANTS. STARTING LOOKING INTO MORE SPECIALIST SUPPLIERS FOR STUFF AS WELL AS DAHLIAS.
QUESTION IN YOUR BORDER HOW DID YOU SUPPORT YOUR DAHLIAS ?? I USED BAMBOO CANES NEXT TO MAIN STEM AND TIED IN BUT SEEN SOME PEOPLE WITH RINGS, TOMATO CAGES AND ALSO USING TWINE TO MAKE A GRID BETWEEN CANES. I NEED TO DO SOMETHING MORE STABLE AS VARIETIES NOT GOT THE STRONGEST STEMS AND NEED MORE SUPPORT.
AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS AND ADVISE. LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR !!! FIRST THOUGH SPRING BULBS AND BEDDING THEN I WILL DECIDE ON THE DAHLIAS AND PUT IN MY ORDER.
YOU TRIED KILBURN FIESTA , HIRWELL GRETA, JANAL AMY, MADAME DE ROSA, ROSE JUPITER, EMMA E, HAMARI GIRL, KENORA VALENTINA, ASKWITH MINNIE AND DALEKO JUPITER I LIKE THE LOOK OF THEM ALL . ALL ON HALLS OF HEDDON. THINK GONNA BE AN EXPENSIVE HOBBIE ! HAHAHA

Should i use something like Ultimate bug killer but more aggressively ? any suggestions ?

Moonlight beautiful ! I will have to add eastwood moonlight and some waterlily to my selection for 2015. Are yours rown from tubor or cutting ? Im not interested in showing blooms more what I like but I do like the showy types although colour, shape and size are important as I plant mixed beds. There was a very large Agapanthus in the Dahlia border that has been devoured by Black Touch also salvias, eryssiums, lupins, liatris, crocosima and somewhere underneath 24 gladioli ! HAHA I wont find them in bloom this year. With the Dahlias I do love the dark foliage ones. I think moonfire although a single is a little cracker. Is there any larger ones dec or semi cactus with dark foliage ? I have a mixture of tubers, cuttings and plant plants. I managed to save some of my tubers which I replanted. Gave some of my tubers to my Dad for safe keeping over winter and then he gave me rooted cuttings rather than the tubers because that was all I needed. Bought a few tubers but again if it was a variety that my Father wanted, he bought the tuber and I got my cutting. Most of my new varieties either came from a mini plant / well rooted cutting but also bought plants at a dahlia sale. It feels like most people growing dahlia have massive gardens / allotments or both. I don't, the majority of my plants are single plant of a variety but there are some exceptions to that but in the main I am happy with the 1 plant per variety.
I'm growing Kenora Valentine, it is big and has dark foliage oh and it is another deep red. I saw it a show and fell in love with it. I've not grown mine right this year but I will grow it next year and I will get it to grow bigger.
Live and learn, hope you discover the right varieties for you.

Moonfire I don't have the facilities like many here. I will in the future but doing extensive work on house which is a priority New kitchen bathroom etc.. I am using 2 plastic greenhouses at the moment which have been good need to clear the bottom area of the garden for proper greenhouse potting shed and compost bins. Moved in here a year ago and the woman said she had a gardener if that was the case he did not know what shears and secateurs where ! Roses a mess also many other things. I dug out a climber 16foot long 8 foot high and 5 foot wide and found underneath it 2 hibiscus , a magnolia and the most deformed conifer ! She also had a tendency to grow masses of hardy geraniums although good ground cover had been left to grow everywhere that was the hard one took 3 days of digging to get that out.
When I cleared it one of my friends who has the most stunning gardens in Suffolk (husband judge for the rhs) said try some dahlias and I bought them in a whim and now I am hooked. Learned so much already she has taught me a great deal . Had not gardened for years but my late mother taught me lots about roses shrubs and bulbs. She had a passion for tuberoses and lillies also rhododendrons.
I like you am going to try many single varieties with the dahlias and this will be my first winter with them. So it will be interesting to see how things get on. Also want to see if I can split any tubors to increase my stock of the ones I like. The Americans seem to do that and saw numerous things online about.
I wish you have growing and I hope we both produce stunning results next year. I have lots to do not just with the dahlias. Got 1 large bed to fill with hydrangea and rhododendrons also underplanting large shrubs with hostas and hellebores. Gonna be an expensive 6 months !

Hi all a question
I bought 3 tubors late from unwins large decorative
Mom's special Thomas Edison Sir Alf Ramsey
My question is my sir Alf Ramsey just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger and still no buds. Has got to almost 5ft tall and the stupid thing is I put it in a pot ! Hahaha
I also bought pooh at the same time which is flowering well.
Mom's special is opening now Thomas Edison has buds
But
Sir Alf is just enormous and I don't have canes big enough for it ! I have stopped feeding it 1 week ago ( was using high potash)
Any ideas ? Leaves look a touch yellow but I put that down to positioning as it gets pretty much full sun and site is windy.
I will post a picture tomorrow

Leaves look a touch yellow but I put that down to positioning as it gets pretty much full sun and site is windy. I will post a picture tomorrow I've got a few that haven't flowered yet bought from a mixture of places but I don't think where they came from has made a difference. Ones that haven't flowered yet range from pom to Sir Alf. Different varieties grow at different speeds (just like with us humans ). I think the more that you grow dahlias and the more that you know your ground - the better you are at predicting when to do various things but even experienced grows modify things taking into consideration new challenges on the way, e.g. the weather etc.
I have 3 plants of Sir Alf none of which have flowered 2 have buds on and the other hasn't. I'm not stressing about mine but I'm looking forward to seeing them flower. I have 1 Kenora Valentine which I did time things right at all, allowed to many buds etc. but it is still beautiful. My Trooper Dan is getting there while my Sir Alfs still sleep. Sure that it will be worth the wait.

Thanks moonlight. It is just massive though ! Hahaha and looks so stupid in this large terracotta pot. I know some are late flowering ferncliff illusion has just started and is rather lovely I have to say. And a large white Dec called white perfection in the front has also just flowered and is also rather nice and reasonable height.
Would be nice if the timings where more similar. I sacrificed a lot of my normal planting for dahlias this year eg pestemons, cannas, verbascum etc.... And I like colour from July onwards.
You learn something new everyday which is great.
I saw trooper Dan online and I liked it you been happy with it ? Also looking at grand prix which I will get. I must stop looking at dahlias online now as spring first and have to order my bedding and bulbs. Thompson and Morgan have some nice new primroses which I want and going to try some tree lillium ! 8 feet tall in 2 years plus the normal stuff.
Oh I have Had 2 dahlia sports as well. One bedding bicolour red and white now sporting all red or red with a white splash and a large Dec as yet unidentified one flower is fibrilated and the others not I just deadheaded the large Dec sport but the others are very different . Got masses of work to do this weekend finally some time off work.
Also my friend at the rhs is giving out warnings of very heavy mildew this year they are having major issues being reported from all over. So start heavier spraying now and keep rotating your fungicide. Doing a full spray tomorrow got the synthane in and the rose clear need to buy another one also. As I noticed some of my bedding ones although sprayed not long ago showing more signs.
If it's not slugs and snails which I have had masses of this year it's aphids or leaf miner or something. Or virus or fungus ! Aaaahhhh and earwigs ! Loads of them.
I Will post some pictures in the blooms section and also in the sports this weekend. Just downloaded the photobucket app to my mobile.
Have a great weekend.

I'm sure I've heard mentioned on you tube I think, that people further south can't grow any of the moonlights is this true? and if so why? How far south are you talking? Eastwood Moonlight was raised in Essex. I don't know which parts of the country the Eastwood Moonlight sports came from.
I can't say for as far down as St. Ives but round London Kent etc. can grow it.
