I was inspired by Merlin’s story and how he was meant to live in his cottage. It all happened differently for me but I was meant to live here. At eighteen, when I was looking for my first house, this one was on the market too. It was way, way out of my price range but it’s good to dream. What I could afford was a tiny, two up, two down, terraced cottage in need of some serious work. With no money but loads of determination and some help from friends I transformed the cottage and sold it a couple of years later for a nice profit. I realised if I kept going I could have the house I wanted. I ploughed all the profit from the first house into a larger house and did the same again, and again, and again. My last house was in Watford, I did think I had bitten off more than I could chew this time. Luckily I had just met the OH and decided I’d quite like this one to hang around for a day or two It took us three and a half years of working evenings, weekends and all our holidays to transform it. Once we’d finished we celebrated with a well earned holiday. Waiting for us when we returned was a letter from my brother containing the details for our house, it was on the market again. We made enough from the house in Watford to buy our house outright. Hard work does pay and dreams do come true. The house did/does need a lot of work but it is so much more enjoyable do it to our tastes rather than what will sell.

Recently I listened to a programme about the have and have- nots, Some good points made about how some rich people could ever 'earn' what they have gained. There are some lucky people who 'acquire' wealth but I doubt that they appreciate it as much as those who have created it. Deborah Meaden is a classic example of this. I believe that time and energy (youth) is all too often wasted as it's really all you need to build. I get tired of hearing youth complaining they've no money. At the grand old age of 25 I had nothing so I saved every penny and like WF with a little help (not financially) I started a business. I then worked even harder for another 5 years before I was able to enjoy life. I can understand the pride and satisfaction that WF must feel every time she wakes to her beautiful home and garden. WF, it's a credit to you and yes I can see how you became a 'brickie'

When I first said “one day I’m going to live there”, I never believed I would, it was only a pipe dream. I’ve also lost count of the times that I have wished I was the type of person who could buy a house where the only work involved was to unpack a few boxes.

What an inspiring story WF...and what a gorgeous house. I am very interested in gardening for wildlife too (altho I'm a complete novice), so I'm looking forward to reading about your garden.
