What an inspiring story WF...and what a gorgeous house. I am very interested in gardening for wildlife too (altho I'm a complete novice), so I'm looking forward to reading about your garden. ....and seeing it on tv ;D ;D

Reading your blog, WF, i admire what you have achieved from where you started from and with all your hard work, how you finally managed to buy the house of your dreams. All this may not have been realised if you and your Husband/partner did not have a stable relationship. Has in my case i started at the bottom of the property ladder, worked our way up then hit the bottom again due to divorce. Started again when i met Mrs No2, seventeen years later that relationship ended. back to square one. Now to old to realize those kind of dreams. I say to both of you put each other first, then you will keep all you have worked so hard for. You have a beautifull house and a garden to die for.

You are not alone Charlie, this is the first garden I've tried more than just chucking a few bedding plants in, it's not easy is it?

Now the weather is warming up it is time to get back to work. There are a lot of jobs to finish, I picked out some fun jobs to start with but the OH said I should start at the bottom and systematically work my way up the garden, unfortunately I have to agree with him Job No.1 is to finish building this wall, it needs to come up another couple of feet. I've got the sand, stone and cement and no more excuses.

WF, are you going to cap the wall with slabs? I'm sure you wouldn't make it look too 'formal' but if there's space for soil, could you encourage trailing plants?

It is capped with a concrete ring beam because the wall is leaning. One day I might do something more to the top but that is as much as it is getting this year.

I put some time into the veg beds today. I put netting up for the peas Cut some more bamboo for the climbing french beans Got the sweetcorn in New potatoes are looking a little sad . . . . . . except the rouges in the onion bed. Sprouts are coming on well as are the tomatoes (taken through the window)

Oh dear, I normally take my veg book and my measuring board with me when I plant but I thought guestimation would be close enough this time. They look so different when they are small. I've just been down and measured them, the book says 18" and I have them 17". Do you think an inch will make a huge difference?
