August/September is the time to buy many bulbs & plant them in the garden for flowers in the spring.

I haven't actually bought any new plants lately though I was tempted by the Heathers in the entrance to Sainsburys last Saturday! When I looked at the label I realized they would not grow well on the balcony as they were the Calluna type & they need acidic compost & water. Being as we live in a very hard water area they wouldn't survive for long as I wouldn't be able to water them with tap water! I can't get hold of rain water either because we live in a block of flats & the water from the roof is canalized by pipes inside the walls. Very little rain gets into the balcony unless pushed in by the wind, especially if it comes from the south-west.
I have ordered a couple of packets of seeds online & they should arrive during this week. I've ordered some 'Black Dragon' Coleus seeds as well as some Geranium F2 seeds.
On Saturday our daughter gave me an Alpine strawberry plant which I've put on the balcony. I haven't grown these strawberries since I worked on my friend Gerry's allotment - over 15 years ago! It had a couple of tiny strawberries! The plant is looking happy at present on the balcony.

Here is a picture of the seed packet, unfortunately without a photo of the plants , of Coleus 'Black Dragon' seeds that arrived in the post today.
I will see if I can find a photo somewhere of them so you can see what they look like.
The Geranium 'Cabaret' F2 seeds just arrived this morning. Here is a photo of the packet.
It's many years since I last grew Geraniums from seed!

Thanks grindle π I was thinking yesterday that I might sow just a very few seeds as they won't be going out on the balcony - at least not before May next year. Being foliage plants they will look good as soon as the true leaves develope. No need to wait for several months before they flower!

Hubby has me bought 3 Alstromeria, a small woodland aster, a large purple aster, a Rudbeckia with multicoloured petals, a pale blue Iris siberica an all orange Knifophia and a red herbaceous Potentilla today from the Breezy Knees nursery. We had planned to go around the beautiful gardens but it started to rain very heavily so we bought plants and then went off to meet up with friends. Photos to follow later on as it is still raining.

I have to totally revamp the borders [nearly all the garden!] as it is eight years since it was last done so they will go onto the back path until I am ready to plant our.

Your garden will look a picture come spring, grindle! ππ For the last few years it's very difficult to buy plants in the market in town. There are very rarely stalls that sell plants any longer. π₯ Besides since Wilco closed all their shops there are only 1 or 2 places that have them. Sainsburys brings some but they have nobody to look after them. So unless you buy any that you would like within a couple of days of new stock arriving they are usually in a very bad state. We don't have a car so we rely on public transport so it's not easy to go to a GC and buy plants. You can only get what you can carry in a bag or two. The nearest one sells mostly plants that are difficult to carry & they are often quite heavy. There is a bus stop a few minutes walk away but the bags can be quite heavy to carry for the 10-15 minutes it takes to get there. So I find it hard to get new plants. While Wilkos was here it was much easier but now it's much more difficult! π₯

that's a shame balc2 do you buy any online at all This year, for the first time, I bought some plants on line. I bought some 'Dragon Wings' Begonias back in May and they have done very well! π I have bought some Pansies that should arrive in a couple of days. I may buy some more plants for the balcony soon.
