This is a vase cottage garden flowers , max.15 stems. Mine is the one on the left. I thought it was nice but didn't win anything but there were 11 entries. This is the last picture

Congratulations for Southport too Derek. It was good that you were able to have a natter with Scrumpy.

Not had much time for gardening yesterday or today. All I did yesterday was to go to the allotment for some veg and plant a lavender that I bought at Southport. Today I have just cut some of the chrysanths down that were badly affected with white rust.

Been at Blackleach all day today . The only gardening I did was to re-stake an apple tree which was leaning over. Had to get someone to help me by knocking the new stake in while I held the tree upright. Went on the allotment this evening and did some more re-staking and tying up of plants which the wind had blown over. Also some more disbudding of dahlias. I have no covers for the dahlia beds but I cover giants individually. Some could do with doing now but it is too windy . I thought it would do more harm than good. The covers would be difficult to keep in position and would keep blowing against the blooms. I do wish this wind would drop because I could do with covering my chrysanths at home and spraying them again.

What has happened to the post I made yesterday? I remember typing it out but it has not appeared on the forum. I harvested the rest of the onions and weeded the bed and planted some lettuces on it. I also covered some giant dahlias on the allotment and at home I covered the chrysanth bed and sprayed the plants. This morning I went to my sons house and cut his privet hedges. It is my own local show on Saturday for which I am the show secretary. When I normally enter a show on a Saturday I have all day on the Friday to get all my exhibits ready and don't usually stage till the Saturday morning. With our show Friday morning is taken up with fetching tables and setting up the show. We have to collect tables from 3 places (I can get 8 in my car), take them to the show venue and put them up and mark the classes on the benches. I also have to go to the hut for the vases and other things we need . Then I go staging Friday evening. Tomorrow morning I have the health walk at Blackleach to do and we have to go shopping as well. So, as you see I have only part of Thursday afternoon and evening, and Friday afternoon to sort my exhibits out. Because of this I made a start today. This afternoon I sorted out my potatoes and onions into sets for showing. These, of course , had been harvested before. This evening I went to the allotment for more of the veg to save me time tomorrow .

Fine when they do as supposed to do but very frustrating when they don't. Hope your show goes well.

Been sorting my veg out for the show most of the day. I had to go to the allotment for what I didn't get yesterday and washed the things that needed it. I do the sorting in the kitchen. For example I lay the beans out on the table in a row and sort them into sizes , the longest at one end graduating to the smallest at the other then sort them into sets of the same length for showing depending on how many the schedule calls for. The runner and broad beans require six in a set but the French beans ask for twelve . Unless you have a lot to choose from it is not easy to find twelve that exactly match. Anyway all the veg is sorted now so I will be concentrating on flowers tomorrow. I told you yesterday that we had to go for the tables and set the show out in the morning so I expected having the afternoon to cut my flowers. I have had a phone call today saying that we can't put the tables up in the morning because other people are using the room. So we have to go for the tables first thing and take them to the show venue but we can't take them into the hall . We have to go back at 3.30 to put up the tables and mark out the classes. It is a lot better if we can do it all at once. So I will have part of the morning and part of the afternoon to cut my flowers.

I expect you already know this trick with runner beans Derek. if any are slightly bent you just wrap them all up in a wet teatowel and leave overnight and it helps to straighten them. Also helps keep them fresh.

My very busy weekend is over for another year. I told you of all the work that goes on before the show-transporting table and putting them up and marking the classes out. After the show of course all the tables have to go back. Before this I have to go home with all the plants that I have been showing and other things I want to keep such as potatoes and (I keep these from show to show ),so it is a lot of work. Anyway ,it was a very good show. The standard of exhibits is higher than most local shows I go to. I did very well and won five trophies. I won the most points in the flower classes and the veg classes and, of course, the whole show. Also most point in dahlias and most points in chrysanths. Altogether I got 18 firsts , 19 seconds and 15 thirds.in dahlias I won with Bryn Terfel(giant dec), Elma E (large dec), Hy fashion (small dec),willos violet (pompom ) and Don Hill(in the class for "any other type" ) In veg I won with long carrots, leeks, and not over 8 oz. onions. This is the one I was most pleased about as there were 8 good entries. I also achieved a milestone in showing. I won my tenthousandth prize and it is appropriate that I did it at my own show. The president announced this when giving out the prizes. I would like to know if anyone else has won so many . I very much doubt it but of course I have no way of finding out. I will show you some pictures, probably tomorrow, unless you are fed up of seeing my pictures.
