I hadn't seen our resident hedgehog for a few days & thought he was hibernating but he must have woken up & felt a bit hungry yesterday as he came out in the afternoon when it was still daylight looking for food. He looks healthy but has a few nasty ticks around his head. I let him snuffle around eating for a while & then popped out to put some more food down & found him hiding under the buddleia near the food trays, he wandered off back to the end of the garden to go back to sleep afterwards.

It is a beautiful hedgehog and looks healthy. Do the ticks have to be left SueA?

I guess the rise in temperature tempted him out, he looks a good size

He does look healthy & a good size, if he looked poorly I would try & take him to a rescue centre. I think a lot of them carry ticks Cherry & as long as the hedgehogs are healthy & don't get overloaded with them they can cope, the rescue centres do take them off when they take them in but you have to be careful to get the mouthparts out. I remember years ago when our boxer dog got one on her chest & I'd never seen one before & thought it was some kind of growth & took her to the vet who removed it & showed me the nasty little thing!

My son’s vet partner looked at your hedgehog SueA and thought he looked good. lesley why would that be? Is it because they are too lively over his quiet place?

Thanks Cherry that's good to know. I'm still putting food out in the late afternoon in case he's still waking up hungry but haven't seen him lately.

Apparently, the Hedgehog population has gone from 30 million to less than 1 million in the last 50 years.

Our hedgehogs have woken up from hibernation around here, there were 2 together in the garden last night. I'd put the camera out because there was something that looked like fox poop on top of a tussock of grass but didn't get a pic. of it only the hedgehogs & a couple of cats but the wildlife is definitely feeling spring-like. This little male hedgehog was either trying to ride a bike or wishing there was a step up onto the food table!

I'll have to dig the trail camera out and set it up !

Not a good photo as I took it through the windows whilst O.H. held a torch for light but this is Edmund Hillary the hedgehog - it has somehow climbed up the pots on the patio to get into the top of this one to eat the peanuts & black soldier fly larvae which I'd put there for the woodmouse & sparrows who potter around there!

Oh, I didn`t know about the ticks, poor things . I haven't seen my hedgehog for several years now though there have been several sightings of a very large one and a smaller one with in my estate. Last year one of my neighbours, about 6 houses away, told me she found one in her garden and put it in a box releasing it in a grassy area at the end of our estate but she sighted one recently and thinks it may have come back. I`ll have to figure out hoe to rig up my outdoor camera.
