Sorry I missed the posts about my new rose - I still haven't seen an open bloom! I wish it would hurry up and flower. My clematis has no buds at the moment, but it's growing well.

I have a Mme Alfred Carriere by my east facing front door, for it's perfume. The 'experts' say roses won't do well without at least six hrs of sun but I find that there are lots that will do well on an east or even north side of the house. I think that a rose needs at least three years to settle in. Lovely pics G

I think the best piece of advice I was given on roses was that you don't get results for 3 yrs. First year they sleep, Second year they creep, third year they leap While at the show on Saturday I spoke to a Lady from 'Apuldram roses' who told me that some D Austin Roses are grown (on licience) by other growers. She also gave me an interesting angle of blackspot; "Think of roses as you would yourself, if we don't eat and drink properly we become susceptable to disease as will your rose" She also suggested that I give them a couple of doses of Bonemeal during the winter. You may find this site useful if you're looking for a particular rose www.roseuk.com

They cost a fraction of the price in the catalogues. A lot of roses are grown in this area for the big names. They go to auction at the end of the season.

It's called Gentle Hermione. The first year it was beautiful. The 2nd year it was even more beautiful. This year (3rd year) it's hopeless. It's only had one flower, and all the petals fell as soon as it opened. Maybe it's because I moved it ? But I don't really think so, I only moved it 3 feet.

Hywel you are a good gardener too.
Merlin, I always think roses bring quick rewards. I would not wait that long for a rose to be flowering.

The "Sleep, creep, leap" refers to attaining full height, you still get flowers each year. Don't give up Hywell, it's probably because it was moved. 3 ft is the same as 3 miles for the rose ;D If that pic is Gentle Hermione then it's as nice as it's name.
