Roses are supposed to be shortened now to stop windrock and dieback, but I just prune mine altogether. If I don't, I sometimes don't get around to it in February, and the roses shoot up with new growth. Well, perhaps not last year with the severe weather conditions, but it did not hurt them.

They are very forgiving arn't they. At The Alnwick Garden all the roses have been pruned back about mid/end November...they come to no harm

I shall do mine this week, then. Thanks, Lou and Cherry - that's useful information.

I should have done mine by the sound of things then, but I haven't. It's too cold now - not for them, but for me . I don't usually do them until the spring though. They're mixed in with other shrubs and things, so everything sort of 'supports' each other

Hywel, you are sounding like an old man. You have a few weeks yet to think about it, but it will be good for you. Get Blodyn off your lap and enjoy the weather.

Hywel, you are sounding like an old man. You have a few weeks yet to think about it, but it will be good for you. Get Blodyn off your lap and enjoy the weather. I've got quite painful arthritis Cherry, and cold weather makes it worse - there is no way I can 'enjoy' it. I feel as if I'm in a straight jacket at the moment - can't turn round or bend. It's impossible for me to do anything in the garden. It will have to wait till spring Please don't say 'wrap up warm' ... I've tried and it doesn't work.

Oh Hywel I am sorry. In that case keep Blodyn on your lap. The roses will still be there in the spring.

I'll get out there and do mine too. Last year I left them too late and they all got a little out of control. The bits I cut off I'll poke in the ground, I did this a couple of years ago and about a third of them grew.

Has anyone grown these before and are they any good?
