Here we are, half way through January....and no visit to the lottie as yet . The weather has been appalling.... either the ground has been frozen solid or like a mud bath.......and there's so much to do.....especially getting my new polytunnel put up. I will be needing a couple of strong brawny men to help us with this ....any offers?.....I thought not Well I have been doing some preparation work and have the beds mapped out and pencilled in where I want what. I have all of my veg seed.....quite a lot left over from last year....and one or two new ones. Got seed potatoes....earlies......Lady Crystl and Sharpes........? (can't remember the other bit) This is a pic from a few weeks ago

Saturday - January 29 At last it was dry enough (frozen really ) to venture down to the allotment garden to see what state everything was in; bearing in mind that I hadn't set foot on it since the middle of November last year!! Surprisingly the leeks are ok (OH enjoyed his leek and potato soup for lunch today ;D) and the swedes.....there are still a few pickings off the sprouts and a handful of small carrots were picked, and enjoyed for dinner. I dug up a few of the dahlia tubers I had to abandon and they were, as anticipated....soft and mushy!....Perhaps the plants that still have their stems on may have fared better.....Will dig up a few when I next visit. The onions and spring greens look ok'ish as do the strawberries. The savoy cabbage are pretty pathetic, having been demolished by caterpillars last year ......they will end up on the compost heap. I went to the society hut and paid my dues for the year £36....this covers water, ground rent and insurance. One of the committee members managed to get hold of some Chemak fertilisers....I got the last box of No 3 ....£4 as opposed to what T&M are charging now.....£6.99..!!

It will soon be warm enough and then there will be no stopping. This year should be a lot easier than last year.

Saturday 5 March At last some real work done!! ....Last Sunday I managed to get some very rotten, smelly dahlia tubers lifted and deposited on the compost heap. Sprouts, turnips and leeks that had gone over joined them. Today I finished clearing the dahlia beds and dug them over; which was a lot easier than when I first prepared them last year. Jack Frost did a good job ;D The morello cherry I planted last year is dead!!!....I'm not at all surprised; it had very few roots on it when it arrived and even though it seemed to thrive......the leaves that grew eventually shrivelled up and died. It was perhaps not such a good idea to move it but the soil layer was not very deep and a lot of shale underneath.....Anway, it has gone to the compost heap in the sky and a fellow allotmenteer is going to get me another one ;D I've raked over the bed where the first early potatoes will be planted; Lady Cristl and Sharpes Express. I have some manure to dig in, hopefully next week. The green manure that I sowed last September got frosted and is very dead ...I'll just dig in the remains anyway........this is in the bed where all the fruit will go. Rasps are already there.....Apple "Lord Lamborne" was planted in the autumn....and "Queen Cox" is in a pot at home ready to move. The gooseberry and blue berries will be moved very soon......also the goji berry; which is going to get pretty big by the looks of it (this was a pressy from our Rosie!) The autumn planted caulis and spring cabbage are tatty little stumps now, after attention from the pigeons....so out they went!!! and the bed raked over. I will have to remember to take my crop rotation chart to hang up in the shed....to remind me where everything is going to go. ;D

You have been busy! Sorry about the cherry, though. I suppose it's too late to take it back and complain, is it?

Sad about your Cherry Lou, but considering the weather we've had it's a miracle that we've not lost more. I'm full of praise and wonder when I see things showing signs of life. I hope your Lady Cristal's do well, I've chosen the same.

You have been busy! Sorry about the cherry, though. I suppose it's too late to take it back and complain, is it? It was mail order and I paid only for the postage....a company on tv....there was an error and I paid postage for 2 and received one. They did ring me about it....broke the connection while waiting for me to come to the phone....and didn't ring back.....and I couldn 't find a number to ring back on....so I didn't bother....but I won't use them again
