No Cherry , I've only got a book of insects which has a section withsome bees in, I do look up any I'm not sure of & I looked up common carder bees years ago, they tend to be mainly gingerish in colour & when I first saw one I didn't know what it was but thought it was lovely! I was talking about your knowledge to my bee neighbour last night. Hers are only one variety and she does not know what they are called, but she has not got much autumn honey this year. She is presently putting two hives together as one has not got a queen, but they are slightly weaker than normal. Even this procedure is slow and full of trickery as they have to be introduced slowly with newspaper between them while they get used to the smell of each other. The bees are closer to my garden now and have stopped visiting the owner's garden and are living in mine. A note to myself - I must make sure I have lots of late bee plants.

The bee's seem to love the single dahlia plants in my front bed Cherry, I am going to grow them from seed every year now.

Beekeeping always seems quite complicated to me Cherry with all the measures you have to take to prevent diseases, swarming etc. , you must have a lot of 'tasty' flowers in your garden already, I always see lots on sedums, rudbeckias, echinaceas in gardens over autumn, the only one of those which lasts any length of time in mine though is sedum & they also like the flowers on my fatsias when they bother to flower!

I've always loved Plumbago, @hywel, and I know you grow it successfully. How long does it stay in flower?

I don't know whether I should be keeping it in the conservatory though, so that it might bloom earlier. May be next year I'll do that. At the moment I put it in a covered area outside.

That's very pretty @hywel , I don't think it would survive here though, too cold & wet.

This is one of the Digitalis I found at the Nursery yesterday. I don't know if the seeds will come true, but I can always hope. I planted them under the apple tree. image post

You can see why I had to bring them home, can't you, Bess.

I think the colours will be the same Geranium. I only grow white ones because my garden is so spotty and after four years two purple ones showed themselves behind the shed, but I took them out before the seeds set.

Geranium, that's a lovely colour

Ahh, that explains it @hywel , I thought you must just have a very mild, sheltered garden. I don't have anywhere like a proper greenhouse or conservatory to keep plants in over winter, I have kept some tender plants in the kitchen sometimes but got fed up swerving around huge plant pots!

I know the feeling Sue ... many of my cacti spend the winter on the kitchen floor ... but it's the ones in the bathroom we have to be careful of !
Here are some September views of my garden ...

The cotoneaster is standing out with its brilliant colour at the moment @hywel. This is a very pretty garden.
