I have had a half plot for 2 years now and the bug has really bitten! For the last 9 months I have been lucky enough to use a piece of a friends plot to grow dahlias as they knew they would be moving to Scotland at some point. Well Christmas week I got the letter to say I could have the whole plot as our friends have moved to Scotland ;D I was really happy as normally can only get a half plot but they made an exception as my OH was on the waiting list also. So now I am in the lucky position to have one and a half allotments, great news for me as I can grow lots of dahlias as well as my veg. I am going to use this thread as a diary so I can also keep a track of what develops when on the new plot. This is a picture of the plot on 1st Jan 2011 after we dismantled the rickety compost bin, rotten posts for the blackberry bush and cut it back. This is the left hand side of the allotment and this is the right hand side as you can see I am lucky in that I also have a tap on this plot

That is a beautiful allotment Candyblue. It already has a raised bed, some canes and big pots. The soil looks really good too.

Pardon my ignorance, but what do you do if you haven't got a tap? Is there access to water somewhere else on the site? That looks a lotter lottie, Candyblue! I hope your digging muscles are in working order.

So, you won't be spending a lot of time at the gym then I agree that soil looks good, is there any unmentionables in it?

Although there is a tap in the summer it only has a trickle come out of it as its the last tap on the line so the others get the pressure first. Our other half an allotment is only opposite it and down a couple (where I am standing to take the pics is a track/road and its the other side of this)
The "raised bed" is a asparagus bed that has been there for years, the wood is rotten and the asparagus isnt as productive as it should be. I am going to build a new asparagus bed up the other end in the next month. i will harvest what I can from the old one this year and then it will be dug up.
The pots are mine from last year as the piece in the front of the asparagus bed is where I had my dahlias last year, as the soil is very good as thats where the manure got delivered.

Congratulations on your new plot, there's a day or twos worth of weeding ahead. Good luck, I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

Yes indeed but it looks like chic-weed rather than the usual 'unmentionables'

Good luck with the plot CB Once under control it will be so much easier to maintain. A petrol tiller/rotovator is a useful tool on a plot that size.
